Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Hey guys im looking for a little advice. I have a stationary setup and i keep my TH900's there but i was wondering if you could help me get another pair of headphones stationary/portable option both amp'd keeping it a max of $400? I don't want to go all out for a stationary/portable headphone.   cant be open back but still want some good sound stage. I was honestly leaning more towards the Oppo PM-3.  I mainly listen to Rock everything from all generations and hardcore/metalcore, rap/hiphop and techno/dubstep.  After reading more into the Oppo PM-3 ive read that if they lack in anything its bass but i dont mind EQ'ing slightly. i was told they can handle EQ'ing bass really well, nothing like the TH900's though lol.  Thank you very much in advance and i look forward to hearing your suggestions :)

I like the th900 very much, but I don't think is close to perfection, for the mid and detail
It s easy to make sound very well, very comfortable ..but I think lcd3 is superior, especially with Peter Gabriel! Less with electronic
But to each is own for sure
The strange thing is that you like the lcd2 and hd650, cans that I also had and liked but you consider too warm the lcd3
For me lcd2 and hd650 are warmer and darker than lcd3
But again
To each is own for sure

But the bass was more present on LCD 2 and as I recall LCD 3 is just as dark as LCD 2/ Hd650. I owned LCD 3 and after the first driver failure/repair I got rid of them.
I never enjoyed them tbh, too warm and dark, and too heavy/uncomfortable.
HD650 is great headphone but for computer games/movies because of the comfort, and If you want laid back sound its them.
They are similar to Audeze LCD line for a fraction of a price ( with all do respect LCD are more technically capable ofc).
Those are subjective opinions ofc.
How are HE1000? Did you have the possibility to hear them?
Or LCD 4, Focal Elair/Utopia if you were that lucky to attend the meeting?

I don't agree
Lcd3 is much more open
For sure darker than th900 (or hd800 or he1000) but not as the lcd2 and hd650 where I had to use silver balanced cable
I have the fazor one and also got a driver failure but still with me
A friend borrowed me the he1000 for a couple of weeks. Very very nice , maybe they miss just a tiny bit of punch but the best headphone I heard
But very expansive and also the amp...
I'm fine with lcd3 and th900
If I have to choose one I go for lcd3(or X)
Never heard focal or lcd4

I have a friend who will agree with you completly. He loves his LCD 3 :)
Hoped you heard LCD4, it got mixed reviews around here.
But none of them got the quality bass of th900 with EDM I think we agree on that.
And congrats, great collection you got there mate.

I had the chance to own the LCD 3 in a trade.  But I suspect the owner had some driver failure issues in the past and hence was very willing to pass it on, and I too was worried about the driver situation, especially since it was out of warranty.  Hence, I never took it on,  But the Audezes do sound good.  Very different signature imo.

I think the TH-900 & LCD3's should be clarified. Personally for me the original LCD3 were warm and I guess somewhat dark but that kinda changed with the LCD3 Fazors.

The LCD4s also have two versions (2015 vs 2016 - I think the 2015 were 100ohm whilst 2016 are 200ohm). I quite liked the LCD4 200ohm however signature-wise is just different from the TH-900 & I personally couldn't say one is better than the other.

Good to know, thanks on the LCD 4 info.
Great review on Fostex HP-V8 such a shame you didn't have HD800 AnakChan.

Not then. But some time after returning the HP-V8, I did pick up the HD800S.

LCD4 has one of the best quality bass ive ever heard , only topped by the Abyss. The quality of bass on the TH900s just cant compare to those two monsters. However, they dont slam as hard as the TH900s (i believe this is due to the fact that theyre open), which is why i love them for a fun can :)

i think the abyss's bass hits harder than the th900 but lacks its extension

With a monster mono block of an amp.

The problem with the Abyss (aside from the "Designed at Sturgis" looks) is that it's a very finicky fit. You can't let the pads completely seal - there has to be some sort of gap there, and I think angle also plays a part. Many ways to get it wrong and only one way to get it right, it seems. Get it wrong and you'll either get less bass extension, or hot treble, or something else entirely. I'm sure there's a surefire way to get it right, but I don't own one. Best to ask owners.
