But can it run Angry Birds???

LOL...dunno yet.

I get you though. With all of the whiz-bang extras DAPs are coming with these days, sometimes I mourn somewhat. That's an appealing feature of the Aune DAPs for me. Turn it on, select folder, go....no bluetooth, no wi-fi, no using it as a DAC. Its just a DAP. That's it.

To be fair to FiiO, so far it looks like none of the extras are getting in the way of what I want....a DAP.

One can use the X5III only as a player and not use all the other stuff and cost less.

DAPs are very susceptible to feature creep. The feature list of some of the higher-end ones doesn't fit on a sheet of A4 paper. Also, now I'm kinda curious whether it actually can run Angry Birds.

Please don't do that on the mate for X5-3 tour thread as this is really not the place for trolling. X5-3 is a DAP, not a game phone, it has a 4" display, not suited for videos nor photos nor games. It is an audio player and that is it. Anyways, this is not the X5-3 discussion thread but the tour thread.

Aye, aye Cap'n.

On a more serious note though, if the X5-3 can run regular Android apps it can be used as a smartphone replacement for people who don't make phone calls or don't send regular texts. That may actually be a good thing.

It's interesting though. I'm hugely looking forward to taking part in the tour and already what I'm wondering about is how it's going to feel to walk around with two fairly large Android devices on my person. I have a feeling that my response to the device might hinge a little on precisely how that works as an experience. The wheel for volume adjustment seems like a huge boon and the device itself being Android... well, that might go either way!

Not really. The screen is small, the perfect size for a DAP but not big enough to read mails or to do games.

As for the other functions of a smartphone, it should theoretically work, and I will report in my review what you can do with it - but I strongly suggest it to be used as a DAP. Android is a powerful tool by itself, but since it was made as a DAP, I would recommend using it as such since it will provide a better overall experience.

Just wait for my review and you'll know most that there is to know

Or I could wait until the X5 arrives on my doorstep (which judging by the size of the tour roster might not happen for the next few months) and try for myself.

What I can say is that the surfing speed is quite acceptable on my home WiFi network. Even with Tidal streaming, I have little problem surfing quickly. Except when the daughter-unit is also streaming...and the wife-unit is on Netflix...sigh...old router, I blame.

But, as I said, I can stream tidal and surf at the same time. I am finishing another review, and will soon delve my full attention to the x5iii tour unit.

I'm also working on the offline Tidal "question" asked in one of these threads...I'm still new to Tidal, so I'll try!

  Hi James,

Does the X5-3 WiFi feature provide for streaming to AirPlay speakers/receivers/etc as well as receiving on-line streaming services the device?

The X5 III supports any feature that any Android device would. As far as I know, it does not support Apple airplay, only certain devices such as the HTC 10 are certified though I've heard you can achieve a connection through a third party app. I have tested and the X5 III works perfectly with Spotify, Youtube, etc. Fiio have swapped the stock DAC and AMP on the SOC so that the discrete units they have implemented function in all applications, not just the stock music player like the LG V10. For those who are wondering if it can game, my unit has been running The Room 3, Pinout and Smash Hit quite smoothly. It has similar internal to the Galaxy S3 but performs much better due to its lower resolution screen (which is sharp enough at 4"). Rob, I will give you the player soon so you can try it out first hand!

Same thought as you - I have ordered mine (titanium) and it should be delivered on Wednesday.
Currently I have a nice Aune DAP but without Tidal or Spotify option.
Local price is 12990 CZK, that is about 480 EUR or 510 USD (we have 2y warranty period given by law).

Hey guys, I'm convinced!  Really stupid question, I guess:  where do I simply buy one of these?

Hi Vobluda, WHERE did you buy it?  I scoured the web, Amazon, even Fiio's own website and AliExpress.  It seems there is no information about buying the unit, and nobody has one that I've found.  Strange... weird... frustrating...

Anyone do a comparison of this unit with the 2nd Gen X5 or the X3/X7?  Anyone know a link?

For those of you in the UK, the tour x5iii is here in Scotland, it got to the UK on Fiday night but DHL only delivered ths afternoon. As you can see below I have an x7, the pictures give you some idea of the size, it has been updated to the newest FW which is very similar if not the same as the x7. I like the slots for the cards it will keep the fluff out and the volume control feels realy nice. So now to do some listening on balanced and the 3.5mm plug. I'll give you some first thoughts in a few hours
