"Wrong" imo is the wrong word. But its a preference that many seem to have. Being able to use certain cables you have invested in is also a good reason. This link may help you out

It seems that you are saying that advantage of a balanced headphone is having to use more expensive cables! Sounds more like a con than a pro to me.

Tyll's post was wrong in parts and irrelevant in others.

LOL what do you mean no advantage and please explain what you mean "at given pricepoint"

No advantage in the real world. The noise rejection? Irrelevant to headphone users. The faster slew rate? Irrelevant unless you think that all SE designs hit the slew rate. The extra power? SE designs can also achieve enough power to drive any headphone.

But disadvantages: more expensive to build balanced amps, heavier connectors, more expensive cables, and compatibility issues with most other audio gear.

You're like the only person who's ever said that there's no advantage to using a balanced setup. Im guessing you've never heard one. Also, tyll is an engineer and use to make amps for headroom so he knows what he's talking about.

@BlakeT - your pics?  How about sound impressions?

Next you'll be telling that that the people selling 24/192 gear are all engineers so it MUST sound better.

I'm not disputing the list of theoretical benefits, I'm just saying they are irrelevant, like 24/192. You won't hear a difference.

This simply isn't speculation like the music formats you are referring to. I will accept your apology even if it's five years from now if you ever make it to a headphone meet or store and you get to hear the obvious difference. Tyll no longer makes products, rather reviews products for us headfiers. He is in no way trying to get money from us.

The obvious differences being a wider, possibly taller image, more focus, separation, generally more control in the bass. One of the best known headphones to really open up with a balanced set up is the hd650.

There is no way you can tell that the balanced topology is responsible for what you hear unless you do an ABX comparison between that and an SE amplifier with the exact same circuit (but the SE version). And I'll bet you haven't done that.

Plus the balanced solution costs more to make, so for the same money you could buy a better SE amplifier.
