@nmatheis, I tried the same song also on my iPad Air without amp and there is no bass bloat. It looks like the bass bloat only occurs on X5 HO port.

How source dependent are the DGS 100s? Aside from the X5 HO, has anyone noticed any changes with other DAPs or sources?

atm I only have my Nokia Lumia 920 but might be getting the fiio x1

My dgs100 sounds better with my Topping NX1 and Fiio E18 than my cayin c5.

Through the c5 I get some bloat and a spike at the top. I get less of this effect on my e18 and Topping NX1.

Is there a mathematical or scientific reason that can be explained?

I like to have my digital players and headphone amp on the 'flat' setting, it works well on all them for me. This shows me how nicely balanced my dgs100's sounds.

For me, dgs100 sounds better with sansa zip rockbox gemzza, then fiio x1...

It's not that amping doesn't improve the mid bass, it does but not enough. I'll try some EQ later

I'm pretty sure I posted some photos of the Eq settings I used on my X5 to reduce mid-bass bloat, increase mids, and reduce treble spike.
