Denon D2000/D5000, MD2000/MD5000 Thread!

I wonder if the D5000 would also benefit as much with a recable? If so, any brave soul out there with some suggestions for recabling them?

I submit my D5000 recable thread from several years ago: http://www.head-fi.org/t/616707/how-i-recabled-my-denon-ah-d5000-markl-modded-using-dhc-and-viablue-components#post_8499605

Nice man, that's one sexy classic looking D7000! What amp are you using? Something completely analog?

That particular one in the photo is my 1977 Pioneer SX-1050 vintage amp that is currently in my family room but it usually is fed by either my Pioneer Spec system (from 1979) which is my main system up in my music room.  I'm all vintage - have 8 systems in use.  And the D7000 sounds amazing from them.............

Last August I acquired a Schiit Modi/Magni combo and a Focal Spirit Professional (FSP) headphones. The last months were spent comparing the FSP to my heavily modded D2000 and making minor tweaks to the latter. My conclusion is that I like the listening experience with the Denon headphones better, and therefore I am getting rid of the FSP.

Highlights of the modded Denon D2000:

1.  More neutral and realistic sound. Especially in the highs, the FSP sounds tizzy in comparison (peak at 10-12 kHz?). Also, the FSP seems to have a dip somewhere else (4-6 kHz?) which cause them to sound muffed sometimes, for instance, when there are clapping hands in live concerts.

2.  Better transparency, by which I mean the feeling that sound originates from outside your head. I believe this could be due to several factors: first, the linearity of the FR curve; second, the D2000 seems to project sound to the front better that the FSP; third, isolation in the D2000 is less than in the FSP (especially after I changed the ear pad foams for activated carbon), which leads to more environmental sounds participating in the listening experience.

3.  Comfort. Although in due time the FSP does loosen up its caliper pressure, the D2000 excel in this regard.

Highlights of the stock Focal Spirit Professional:

1.  Bass is a bit tighter and more textured. Sometimes it feels that it is more pronounced too, but this could be due to the fact the FSP sounds warmer overall. I want to turn up the volume of the D2000 on some tracks in order to get that additional bass presence.

2.  Better isolation. This also seems to lead to better detail retrieval, but my feeling is that soft sounds tend to disappear in the D2000 only because they get mixed with other sounds coming from outside the headphones.

In conclusion, I was very surprised to be able to tune the Denon D2000 in such a way that it sounds very close, and to my taste better, than the FSP, which are known for their excellent neutrality and superior technical qualities.

Does anyone know were I can get replacement pads for my D2000?

Thanks:)

There are a few options -

1. Mr Speakers Alpha pads for $59
2. Lawton Audio angle pads for $99
3. Lawton Audio sometimes sells take off stock pads for around $30ish
4. In the past few pages there was a post with pads for $38 which I have used and am happy with for the price.  They are basically Denon clones and similar to the Lawton angles.

Alpha pads worth it over the eBay ones?

Those biocellulose driver are truly amazing. With proper housing and cable, they offer the best "fun" audiophile sound signature. Good thing that Creative Aurvana Live are still using the smaller 40mm biocellulose driver.

Does anyone have photo evidence of how close Option #4 is to the Lawton pads?

I have an old pair of Lawton-stuffed stock pads (stuffed before he started selling the after-market pads). They are significantly thicker than the pics posted on eBay.

With a few small splits starting to appear, I'm needing to get a new pair sometime soon. I will probably save up for the Lawton -- unless someone can share a side by side comparison.

Mikelap, am I correct in assuming that the second pic (showing the Denons) are the Lawton pads? If so, I'm definitely going to save up and get them. Thanks!
