Denon D2000/D5000, MD2000/MD5000 Thread!

The d2000 definitely has more treble, bigger soundstage, more bass, more fun. I'm with biscuitz.

I've noticed an interesting difference between the D2000 and the D7000. The D7000 performs best out of desktop amps, while the D2000 likes DAPs and op-amps. When comparing them out of a desktop amp the D2K kind of blows/sucks compared to the D7K. But plug the D2K into a portable amp or a modern HTR and they will shine, out-performing supra-aurals and IEMs that cost many times more.

I think that the fact that the D7K has a 1/4" plug and the D2K comes with a 1/8" plug is a huge clue to these synergies, and it's not the first time I have noticed that headphone manufacturers will use the headphone plug size as guidance as to amplifier synergy with their various models of headphones.

Grokit can you elaborate a little bit more in the difference you hear? I'm curious on the difference with the d2000 with the portable vs. desktop amp. I'm not doubting you just interested.

The first time I noticed this with the Denons was when I had traded for a D5000, and I plugged them into a WA22 balanced tube amp and hated them. I arranged to trade them away, but then plugged them into a modest op amp-based xhead amp, and they sounded shockingly improved.

When I say improved I mean in just about every area, they went from veiled and compressed to open and musical, the difference was not subtle. Similarly, when I plugged my D2000 into the XCANS amp that lights up the D7K so well, the D2K sounds pretty poor in comparison.

Yet the D2K clearly outperforms both the FX700 and ESW11 out of the Sony PH1, and sounded pretty darned spectacular out of the Headstage Arrow as well. I suppose to complete the loop I need to try the D7K out of the PH1, maybe I'll compare them out of a laptop as well.

I've been appreciating my D2000s for ~5 years now and have been looking for a set of earpads on/off for a few months now to replace my well worn ones. Lawton Audio is the easy answer but I'm not impressed with the $99 price tag. Have I missed a good set of pads for the D-series somewhere along the way? I'm interested in gel, or leather, the Beyerdynamics gel 770 are "supposed" to be available in August (not holding my breath). I was surprised at how difficult it is to find a set of 100mm/4" pads, seems like there's gotta be something out there I've missed.

Have you considered the Brainwavz HM5 pads from Mp4nation? There are a few impressions with them a few pages back somewhere in this thread.

The Hifiman HE-400/500 pads should fit - the velour ones fit perfectly (I have some on my D2Ks right now), so I imagine the pleather ones do too, although I've not personally tried them.

Pretty much all pads used for modding the Fostex T50rp would also work, therefore the Shure pads, Dog pads, Stax, Beyer, Audio Technica, Sony SA series, everything basically...

Oh and for sure the Hifiman pads

Awesome, the HM5's have been my budget backup if I can't find anything gel or leather under $40-50. Got a lot more to check out now, many thanks

Keep us posted please.

Found a pair of used Beyerdynamic gel pads and they arrived today. They're a bit firmer than I was expecting, and they get a bit warm. They are a nice thickness & no complaints overall, I think they'll keep the d2000's in use for a few more years

I'll look into covering them with nylon or something to keep the heat down.

Here's some info I've found about possible pads for anyone else unsatisfied with the current options. Make sure to confirm that the application will work yourself.

(The d2000 uses 100mm/4" undercut angled pads, so anything with similar dimensions "should" work)

Lawton Audio
JMoney
Beyeydynamic gel ear seals for dt 770 / 880 / 990
HM5 / Fischer FA-003
T50RP / Shure 840
HE400
dt770 / dt880
dt250 / dt280
JVC ha-rx700 / ha-rx900
ATH-a500 / a700 / a900 / a1000
Sony SA series (sa3k, sa5k etc.)
ad900? w5000
Alpha Pads
LCD 2 / LCD 3

*David Clark aviation gel pads do not fit, (they're ~1/2" too small in diameter, but are very nice pads). They are supposed to fit the m50.

I was surprised at how difficult it was to find angled & leather pads. Guess that's why LA can sell theirs for what they do.

I've been curious whether LCD-2 pads will fit.  I've heard they fit T50RP, so wouldn't they fit Denons as well?  That would give another leather option as well as their "vegan suede" pads.

You can add the Alpha Pads to that list.
