if it's the holy grail then do we do nothing. we need the hardware to access the music. but yes sometimes when you already have the golden egg you will change it for something else to chase a different but not always better sound.

purk overall i have to pick between the sony or denon which would you choose and why?

Seems like people in this thread would lean toward the Denon (not a surprise)

Would expect people in the Sony thread to lean towards the Z1R...

A quick look at costs on Amazon (Sony Z1R) and Thomann (AH-D9200) appears to give the Denon a ~£400 pricing advantage (£1281 vs £1686).

Based on that, I'd pull the trigger on the Denon and see if you like it as much as the folks in this thread do. If not, sell it and then go for the Z1R.

I don’t think Denon market themselves very well compared to Sony. In Japan I see a lot of market every where for the signature products but none for the I prefer the Z7 m2 over the D7200 but I like the D9200 better than the Z1R.

I like the Denon better. It’s a very musical headphones. Size of soundstage is smaller but it get everything more right than the Z1R. Bass on the Denon extends very deep without exaggeration on the mid bass.

Smaller than the Z1R but very precise. The Denon is also easier to power compared to the Z1R. It’s a beautiful headphones.

Agree with both of these quotes. I really like my Z1R but Denon is the more safe choice if one have to choose.

They sounded great when I tested them out in Japan. If not for the Sony IER-Z1R, I would have added the 9200 to my collection.

Has anyone seen som good frequency charts for the 9200? I only find the 7200. They where similar to the magnis which explains why I thought they shared similar balance.

Great choice! Maybe people are being put off by a lowly bamboo housing.

yes indeed.

there are other products out there that may make for a more impressive appearance. for instance, the z1r is a thing of sheer beauty imo.

the d9200 may appear humble when it comes to material choices, haptics and aesthetics.

but it appears to me that its creators made a few conscious decisions where they put function before form.

bamboo and faux leather may not sell well. but i believe these materials have been deliberately chosen for their specific characteristics and are relevant elements in shaping the d9200's overall sound signature.

the result in my opinion is a very "honest" product with superior audio performance, acceptable appearance, and a reasonable price tag (especially considering it's handmade in japan).

Got these for the 9200 and 5200 from Headphonecheck.com...no 7200 on their site

First time I've seen this site; buyer beware

Just to confirm the mdr z1r soundstage is not as good as the denon 9200 soundstage. But the previous totl sony r10 had better soundstage than the denon 9200?
The r10 is what they call, "unobtanium"...
Almost impossible to find, let alone hear.
It sounds extremely extremely natural.
That is a trait the Denon has to some good amount.

But the r10 had two versions. I heard tbe bassier version, which I found very neutral and extremely natural...

Nothing like these new sony and Denon, which both have powerful bass.

The Sony z1r leans toward the dark side, with more mid bass and low mids, with hi resolve.

The Denon leans to the neutral/bright side, with more defining bass, more mid focus, and more top end air, to my ears anyways.

The Sony does reach a high level of resolution, regardless how the Frequency response is.
