What's their next best closed back, Aeon 2 Closed?
Keep in mind sound is subjective. I own both the Aeon 2 closed and the E3. The thing about the Aeon 2 closed is there are inserts you can add that changes the sound profile (thus the sound can change) and honestly though I like them I prefer less expensive open backs. The Noire 2 before I listened to the E3 sounded great but now...I just can't listen to them anymore because of the E3. I have all the inserts in on the Aeon 2 Noire (just like Dan Clark btw as he said that's how he listens to them) because the single insert made it sound to bright. In order of preference to me E3 > PC38x (Open) > HD6xx (Open) > Noire 2. The Noire 2 after listening to the open backs and the E3 sounded flat, bass congested with high frequency peaks even with inserts. Planar also tend to have a more metallic sibilance then traditional drivers so keep in mind that to me it took some time to get used to but now I prefer it. If I want a more laid back and smooth sound I just throw the E3 on my Bottlehead S.E.X. or Little Dot Mk 3 Tube Amps, but for veil lifting I use my Topping L50. Astell & Kern SR35 is kinda in the middle and what I use most of the time and prefer. FYI the PC38x to me are amazing and the best bargain out there.

I finally, and unexpectedly, got the chance to demo the E3 today at Linear Tube Audio. I was really there to try out the Z10e + Aero DAC combo with my electrostatics, but the E3 was there, so I listened to it for a bit. Mostly used the Z10e's Low output headphone jack, with a bit of use on the High output jack. I don't listen that loudly, so the low output was more than good enough in terms of headroom. DACs used were the Ferrum Erco Gen 2 and LTA Aero.

Comfort was good. Not a fan of how the earcups extend so far down my face, but it's still comfortable.

Sound-wise, it's the most agreeable DCA headphone I've heard. Now, I'll be clear in that I'm not normally a fan of DCA headphones. I have the Aeon 2 Closed with perforated pads (nearly identical to the Noire) and I've heard the Stealth, Corina, and Expanse multiple times and the Ether 2 once. I don't like any of those headphones. They sound varying levels of dull and lifeless to me. But the E3, I could get along with it.

There are actually some dynamics here, roughly on par with my SR-X9000 and Shangri-la Jr electrostatic headphones. I know this doesn't sound like high praise, but the previous generation of DCA headphones were practically outdone in dynamics by those same estats. The E3 avoids the deadened, isolation booth sort of sound that made me dislike the Stealth and Noire. Drums have more of the decay that I expect from a drum without being as overly dense and dampened as on earlier iterations.

The soundstage was fine. It's not small, it's not as large as my electrostatics (which are open-backed), but I think it still lacks in some openness, which is a separate attribute from soundstage size. Excusable since it's still a closed-back and does a lot of other things well, and more openness in a closed-back usually requires compromises elsewhere.

Tuning was good, but also the source of my main issue with the sound. There's an odd emphasis somewhere in the upper mids that colors vocals with a slightly nasal tone. It sounds a bit like you push your tongue towards the top-back of your mouth and sing/speak like that. I picked up on it within seconds and couldn't unhear it. It sort of spoiled the sound for me, because it's so neutral everywhere else that there's nothing to hide that coloration. By comparison, the Shang Jr also has a boost in the upper midrange from 3-5K, but the scoop between 1-2.5K balances it out so vocals sound breathy and emotive, like their voices are strained with emotion, rather than just nasally. I also heard a bit of sizzle in the upper treble, but that wasn't as bad as the upper mids being odd. Fortunately, this is just a tonal issue, so it should be easy to EQ out.

Anywho, I'm glad I got to hear it. The E3, like all DCAs, do many things very well. They're well-built, extremely detailed, and quite neutral with good tunings. Anyone in the market for a $2K headphone would do well to give it a demo.
How do the E3 compare to your L700mk2?

Have you had a chance to compare them to the 007mk1 or modded 007mk2?

Thanks

I've definitely noticed this. Going back to any closed back (especially bass heavier) headphone after listening to the E3 for a while and it sounds very cupped-in with what sounds like an extra layer of filter material in between your ear and the driver. The E3 really does an excellent job of avoiding cup resonances. However, I feel part of this lack of cupped-in sound results from the E3 almost been being semi-open due to the larger bass port. I get a lot more audio leak from the E3 vs. other DCA headphones (family members commenting they can hear the music etc).

I have Aeon 2 Noire, but I find I prefer solid pads over perforated, which boosts mid-range, controls the bass a bit, and seems to have no bothersome treble peaks to me at least.

Both Aeon 2 and ETHER 2 have a more laid-back signature that doesn't have the same immediate "wow" factor as the E3 or other more dynamic headphones (Focale for example). However, for longer listens I really like both A2C and ETHER 2 as I find their bass quality very good and the sound signature is non-fatiguing.

I still really like the older DCA headphones like Aeon 2 closed despite any shortcomings and I appreciate the mid bass bump for many genres.

I seem to be in the minority but I'd prefer maybe 10-20% more sub-bass and mid bass in the E3 stock tuning. Fortunately the respond very well to EQ or the Schiit Loki.

I did not bring the L700mk2 to the demo, so I could not compare them side by side. And I haven't heard the 007mk1; I only heard a presumably stock 007mk2 for a few minutes at CAF. Sorry to not be any help there.

Would you say they are roughly competitive, though?

Bearing in mind Noire 2 are 1k$ less,,, they are a great headphone in their price range?... I could get a Noire and a Mojo 2 and with my thick skin could go for walks around town and get the bus with them on... potentially.

Ok,,,, dull in comparison to 3k open backs..
I don’t know, as I haven’t heard any of these. But better than Hifiman’s Audivina closed ones, a 2,2k headphones.

Anyone tried E3 on the Gustard H26?
H26.E3.Combo.png

In short: Yes, H26 and E3 work great together! :)
[using X26Pro/Holo Cyan 2/Cayin DAC11 → P26 Preamp with Sparkos SS2590 → H26 → DCA E3]
