I wouldn't say the gap between them are that huge. I don't use the DT770's out of my WA6SE though, as it's in a different rig.

The D5000 is a higher Tier imo than the D2000, DT770/880/990. If you're considering the D5000 consider the other $500ish options as well.

If he could get them for the $399.00 range it would be well worth it. I wouldn't pay $500.00+ for them though.
