It's definitely a more natural sounding tuning, but a warm analogue one. I wouldn't call the tuning "fun", but "right".Please can you expand on that a little bit?
Is it more musical, organic, fun, technical etc?
Thanks!!
It sounds like there is nothing recreating the signal path to your ears. You just pressed play from the master, either tape (a little hiss) or pro-tools. There is nothing between you and the music. The detail jumps your brain filled in with standard delta/sigma dacs to make an accurate portrayal of a performance, just isn't necessary anymore, and you can kind of relax. Your brain doesn't have to work as hard.
I have always had a problem with upper mids (harsh) and the digital filtering done. In all cases it sounds like a washy band that wound through the music with just this unnatural aesthetic, note decays and certain overtones are just not right, and I either had to EQ it down or buy components with it tuned out. I have no issue with this on discreet r2r. I can leave the upper mids alone and actually enjoy a natural tuned device that sounds proper and in the correct tonality the instruments live in.
"Where have you been all my life" is the phrase that sums up my current experience.
Only problem is going back to your old gear. When you do, your brain has learned to be lazy now (not in a bad way), and you can hear the digital harshness due to the recreation of the signal and the jumps in clarity you needed to make need to be relearned again. A/B'd r2r vs. delta/sigma is just an unfair fight in this regard. You need a good hour to get back the love of your previous fav dap. Maybe that's why there are so many vehement fans of r2r once converted? Going back is literally a hard thing to do.
