beyerdynamic T5p: Photos and first impressions.

Hi T5P users!
I just purchased a used pair on ebay and im kind of unsure why these cans get praise. Perhaps i just havent figured out the tilt in the drivers sweet spot yet but if anyone has some tips id be grateful to hear it!

Griploc, you just made a big mistake. :D

Jokes aside, these headphones have a particularly unique Beyer signature, like or loath. No amount of tilting or adjustment will dramatically change that signature. The low end is very tight with very little to no bloom, the mid range band is said to be forward and the high band crystal.

The truth should you be ready to accept it, is that you will have to find out what to appreciate about the T5p. Hope that helps you on your journey.

I also continue to enjoy these. Sometimes even without an amplifier directly from my iPhone. These headphones have entirely given me the opportunity to simplify my life. I just went through a "simple-living"-project in my life trying to get rid of dead weight and things I never use. With the T5p I now have only one full size headphone and I do not even need a desktop amplifier. I can enjoy it with all genres. With the Quickstep and AHA-120 the T5p sounds like I could never ask for better setup.

I am thinking that it probably sounds very good with the AK120. So you do not have to aim for more than a Quickstep if you ask me. It is a great match and gives the T5p more air, speed, slam and attack than from the iPhone.

I have wondered how the T5p synergy is with an AK240? Could be fantastic, albeit excessively expensive for the AK240.

I feel they sound a bit congested in the mids, soundstage is a bit smeared and the dynamic presentation is a bit dulled.
I like the thick sound signature they have as opposed to the k702 thin presentation
I find the angle and the positioning of the headphones can dramatically change the sonic character of the t5p.
When i compare back and forth with my mackie hr824 mk2 near field monitors they sound almost identical in frequency response.
I think these headphones are meant to sound like nearfields rather than headphones.

@AJHeadfi

I was recommended the T5P headphones over the HD 800s from a former Sennheiser tech and high end custom cable maker 'James S' from Stefan AudioArt. He says the T5P are a better fit for monitoring and mixing than the HD 800s.

He also says the T5Ps are mis-marketed as just portable headphones and I really trust his judgement not just because of his extensive experience with headphones but also because he has been bang on with everything else musically for me regarding cables and acoustics.

What are your thoughts on the T5P, I am an avid AKG user and was also considering going with the k812 but reluctantly declined due to bad reviews regarding distortion.

I thought for sure the HD800s would be the route to go

Griploc,

I traded a T1 for my T5p...and at first listen, I though I had made a terrible mistake.   After around two weeks I started to appreciate the T5ps signature, and now it is one of my all time favorite headphones.  I'm done with closed cans -- the T5p is my endgame closed set.

Keep listening to them.

Keep working on them. I don't think they are a good monitor headphone, they have a fairly non-linear response across the band. Certainly not intended by Beyer as a monitor, those duties go to the DT1350 etc. It might be possible to negate the band response by equaliser if linear is what you're after. From what I've seen the HD800 is significantly more linear, but open back and also a great headphone. T5p minds it's own business as a black sheep.

I received my Dragonfly 1.2 yesterday and I am really enjoying it as a source for my amplifier and the T5p's.  Using the Dragonfly's built-in amplifier with the T5p sounds great, although the treble seems over-emphasized at times.

I see. When I get them back from recabling i will post up a mix done entirely with the t5ps and see how they translate in a mix. I really hope you are wrong though because I was leaning towards the hd 800s firstly for transparency and accuracy. I personally wouldn't want to alter the frequency response the headphones are producing, i could damage the signal by distortion in the dips

I would expect that. The T5p are borderline bright and throwing in a bright ESS Sabre DAC will only emphasise that. Version 1,2 is smoother though.

I would rather match the Meridian Explorer with the T5p.

I hear a lot of users saying the t5p is a bright headphone. From just a brief listen to them in my studio i find they are more low mid heavy if anything. K702 headphones are a bright headphone, maybe i have a off pair of t5ps but that what i hear from them

After listening to the T70, ER-4S and Tzar 350 for some time I thought the T5p had too much bass and was too dark sounding in the beginning. I was debating with myself for some time whether I could live with T5p or if they were too dark for me. So when people say headphones sound bright or dark it is alway relative to what they are used to. After some time I got accustomed to the T5p sound and I couldn't imagine selling them ever again.

Same here, I love my toilet bowl white K701, and being used to that, A2000X, and SR325is, I didn't find T5p bright much.

So they're used to having no treble?  lol
I wonder what they would say about going from "less treble" to T90.

I find the t5ps have similar characteristics to the k702, but they are bigger in sound with less hf content and a more accurate bass response. I just wish the t5p soundstage was better in imaging, other than that i think they sound great

For everyone who thinks the T5p is bright like me, have you tried smoothing out the treble with a tube amp of some sort?
