I thought it would be fun to discuss this. I think it would also be really helpful for people who are just looking for one headphone. Please don't hesitate to share your comments and opinions. The only headphones I have found to work well with most/all genres, at this point, have been the M50's and the HD25's. What do you all think?

I posted this just to hear people's opinions/insight on what they think are THE best headphones for all genres. Regardless of price (could be budget phones to wayyy hifi).

For a reasonable price, the Sennheiser HD-600 does everything well.

For a little more, I like the Sennheiser HD-800, Grado HP-1000, and Stax Omega II, Mk. 1.

Agreed with the M50s. So far, they're the only analytical yet fun headphones under $300 that I could find...

The HFI-580s also get my vote, but it has too much treble that may put off some genres.

I can say my hd650's sound fantastic with all types of music that I listen to... and I try to listen to everything. Very pleased with them. I want to hear the hd600s as I have not yet gotten a chance to, I hear they are a heck of a set for the cash and a great deal compared to the 650s

I thought the HD650's were awful for Metal and Electronic.

The HD-650 is good for just about anything. You do have to amp it well, because it's a window into your amp. Pair it with a mediocre amp and it'll be mediocre.

No, very decent. Laid back sound, not particularly engaging, but great allrounders

For under $150 the ATH-M50 headphones are amazing all around.

They do not need to be amplified so it is easy to listen to music straight from a laptop or portable music device. They are also super durable, because of I have slept on top of them multiple times and have also thrown them against a wall multiple times and they still work fine. Their durability allows for them to be packed into a briefcase or backpack without having to worry about them getting damaged if people are bumping into them. Plus they fold up.

The ATH-M50's weak spot may be in genres such as classical were open cans and a wider sound-stage is much preferred, but for everyday use and portability you really can't go wrong with them.

M50's being closed also helps with the fact that they isolate very well and that they don't leak sound. I can listen to action movies on my computer late at night with the M50's without having to worry about waking up other members of my family and the rich bass is another positive when listening to music and movies.
