Hello Head-Fi!

Our 75th Anniversary has offered us an opportunity to revisit key Sennheiser moments. This month in Sennheiser history is particularly special as it was 29 years ago that the original Orpheus was released.

If you’ve heard either Sennheiser electrostatic headphone, feel free to drop a first impression. Here’s a look back on that historic headphone from our Anniversary team.

This month in Sennheiser history – August 1991:

We created the best headphones in the world.

Former CEO Jörg Sennheiser's goal was to build a milestone in audio history. He wanted the world’s best headphones — headphones that would forever be associated with the Sennheiser brand and pursuit of audio excellence. He asked the engineers to create headphones that transform music from something you listen to into something you live in.

Legend has it that time and money didn’t play a role in this very special mission. When the developers heard the call to “Build the best headphones in the world!”, it certainly spurred their ambition. Then when they heard that “costs play no role” they knew it was a passion project as well as a statement to the world that Sennheiser is the industry leader when it comes to sound.

We had experience with electrostatic headphones but these new ultra-high-end headphones were expensive. The components were all made from top materials and a unit price was nearly 20K Deutschmarks (€10K). Named after the legendary musician in ancient Greek religion, the Orpheus was launched and produced as a limited edition of 300 units. Audiophiles and journalists of that decade considered the Orpheus “The best headphones of the world”. It became an icon for audiophiles with the added value of being truly rare. Worldwide audiophile collectors bought it and over the decades the value rose to €30K per unit.

Fast-forward nearly 25 years to 2015. We wanted to show that we could push the limits further and we launched Orpheus' successor, the HE 1. Our uncompromising philosophy and dedication to sound remained, but this time we had the opportunity to add unique features and state-of-the-art technology.

HE-1-1.jpg

We upgraded the sound with better transducers and placed the amplifier next to them making the HE 1 active headphones (Orpheus was passive). Our ambition was to create the feeling of being at a concert as opposed to just listening to a recording of one (this is the same concept driving our AMBEO division). Once the sound quality was dialed-in, we turned our focus to making the HE 1 an eye catcher. By placing the tube amplifier into a Carrara marble housing, we transformed the "turn-on" feature into a one-of-a-kind experience.

It takes five days to build one HE 1 by hand. Six-thousand components are needed to produce it. Nearly all mechanical parts are made in Germany and suppliers for some special materials are located in Europe. At the HE 1 launch, one guest said “The sound of the Orpheus gave me goosebumps, but the HE 1 makes me cry.”

Today, the HE 1 cost €50K (plus tax). It is made to order, assembled in its very own room in our headquarters in Hannover, Germany. When we talk about premium audio and best-in-class sound, it’s because we strive to achieve them. And having the best headphones on the planet for nearly 30 years is a testament to our commitment to the future of audio.

Want to listen to an HE 1 in action? Head over to one of our brink-and-mortar stores (once it’s safe) and hear what you’ve been missing. #Sennheiser75

Listening to the HE-1 is truly a wonderful experience. Would love a chance to hear the Orpheus and HE-1 side to side but that may be a dream to hear so much wonderful stuff at the same time.

I've heard both, but never side by side. What I can say is they are both incredibly amazing pieces of audio and both worthy of the high praise they both receive.

I've had the pleasure of spending a good hour listening to the Orpheus and HE1 side-by-side, it was truly epic - both the craftsmanship and the audio experience.

I am one of probably a few hundred owners of an HE 1 and so happy every day when listening to music with it. When I first had the chance to listen to an HE 1, I was blown away by this experience. At that time I never thought that I would finally buy one, but two years and two extended listening sessions later it finally happened. In retrospective, I should have gone for the HE 1 earlier, it would have saved me time and even money! :xf_cool:

Its performance is unmatched, a different ballpark, the ONLY true endgame headphone setup, imo. Nevertheless, I can still have fun when listening to other headphones too, which is great and important (one does not have an HE 1 available on the go, for example).

If you have the chance to listen to an HE 1, just do it. It shows what is possible in music reproduction and in which regard so many other setups simply fail. Allow yourself half an hour of pure bliss, an experience to remember. And, yes, the HE 1 made me cry too, and it still does! :)

Cheers

The only weird thing is that Sennheiser doesn't allow for custom music to play (as far as I know).

Maybe the songs are modified or HE-1 only plays those types of music great.

I have the pleasure of listening to HE-1 when the first demo unit made its way across Asia, and they do allow me to use my own music. Nothing I demoed that day doesn't sound spectacular on it. That only thing I don't like is the fact that I can't quite afford to bring one home.

Hey Sennheiser,

Love your company and your products but why is the pace of innovation so very slow when it comes to open back audiophile products?

HD600 - 1997

HD650 - 2003

HD800 - 2009

HD700 - 2012 - Treble attack from hell

HD800S - 2016 - 7 years for a 6db reduction in the HD800 treble spike!!!

HD660 - 2017 - Almost identical in performance to the 600 series, identical build.

I've owned every headphone mentioned above except for the HD700.

Please develop a true successor to the HD800 with a frequency response similar to the new HE-1. Price it less than $2500 and you will have the best selling high end headphone.

It's been 23 years since the HD600 and we still don't have a true successor!!! The HD700 was a failure and the HD660 is not different or much of an improvement.

23 YEARS!!!!! :D

Congrats for a 50K system that no normal person can afford. People who buy such things can simply buy every product on the market.

Please show us true enthusiasts some love. The people who save $1500 to $3000 over a year or two to buy one high end headphone.

Give us a true successor to the HD800 or a true successor to the HD600.

All the best.

A Sennheiser fan

I remember hearing the original Orpheus at a hifi show and thinking that it sounded bland and boring. Obviously this wasn't being represented properly in a noisy show environment and I was also uninitiated into the world of proper headphone listening at the time. Was a beautifully made piece of kit nontheless.

I’m stuck with HD540 G, HD580 ep, and an NB Lambda. Not mention a few old planars... I have no new headsets!

Okay... maybe Susvara down the road if WE (uggghhmmm as in there are many others) don’t get anything soon.

They already did hd820 :D
