Audeze LCD-3 Impressions Thread

Depend on which lcd2. I used to own two pairs. While one did sound closed-in, the other one sound quite open (3 months apart of production date). Compared to lcd3 at that time, this particular pair did sound bit forward and open. From memory, my previous lcd-x had a similar traits to that lcd2 actually, but more refined. I miss that pair of lcd2 :frowning2: raw and fun phone ...

The problem with drivers that files every half year could to be issued by amp filure - self oscillation or output voltage drift.
Check drift of output is simple with DMM, for the oscillation test scope is required at least, DSO is better.

This is a fine suggestion, but not really the cause.  My Aurailic Taurus has an output offset voltage of 275µVDC on the left channel and 750µVDC on the right, using the balanced output.  (Just put it on the bench and checked with a Keithley 2001.)  Not enough to damage a driver since it's only a few µA into 100Ω (the LCD's are purely resistive) and we're talking nanowatt dissipation.  No commercially marketable amplifier is going to oscillate unless it's defective... especially not with a resistive load - it tends to be capacitive loads that cause oscillation, but then again any decent amp will have a zobel decoupler.   Resistors just aren't prone to induce oscillation! :)  I'm afraid it's not the root cause for the driver failures... good thinking though!

There is enough of amps that clearly changing  their  "signature" with different cabling...
Now the phones cable is small, but still capacitor + antenna.

Another idea about driver failures that coming to mind is humidity issue. When phones are in use, the thin film diaphragm of driver  collects a small drops of water because temp difference inside the headphone cup and outside. This causing an corrosion of the planar conductor, and with time it fails.
I don't thing that there is a problem with just mechanical conductor breakage. Planar magnetic transducers are known  for a long time as reliable.
Just interesting what Audeze  crew doing to defeat that issue.

Anyone looking for a great amp for the LCD-3's? See my signature line. Cheers

I rather liked the LCD-3 through the Vioelectric V281 and the Invicta DAC. The headphone cables used were the Cardas Clear. Very smooth sounding and much better imaging than the LCD-2 that I own. Unfortunately once you hear what something could sound like it is hard to forget so now my LCD-2s are forever tainted.

I have the brown leather free ear pads on the LCD-2. I agree that they feel nicer and for those of use with glasses you also don't have to worry about getting abnormal cracking where the pads meet the glasses like you would with leather.

I hadn't worried about that at all ... until now!

I got my Norne Solv X cable today, and I have to admit that it does sound like there is some improvement over my Q Audio cable.
It seems like it sounds more airy and open.

Yep they are great, The guy who makes them is actually a head-fi member called Lohb, Great product and makes the world of difference.

I went from sore head after about 1 hour to 5 hours and forgetting I was even wearing my LCD 3's.

Maybe I mis heard/read, but I though Audeze where going to come out with a kit like this?

I am still confused how it helps? Does the original hand band still touch your head?
