YMMV, but I find that using any case on AK players (I tried on AK240, AK380 and AK380 Cu) would make the sound a bit more fuzzy and more congested than if there is no case. The AK380 Cu is definitely easy to scratch though, so take care. If you only care for its sound and does not mean to show off, by all means go for the AK380. To me, it is both, so I don't use any case. It is just like using the new iPhone on debut day after paying a premium to the speculators - using a case on it is the last thing one would want to do (most people here only get theirs on the third week, even if they can get it in the first two weeks by chance, they would sell it).

Seriously?

You can try A/B-ing it at home all you want. No BS. There is a reason why people put high end desktop gear (much more expensive than AK380 - we are talking about gear that is at least ten times more expensive or with ten times more snake oil than the AK380) on rack and feet which are by themselves worth over a thousand dollars.

The reason for that is to eliminate vibration caused by speakers and room activity as it resonates through the floor, not to mention speaker bass vibration. Using this argument, you would not want to walk while listening to your DAP.

Please provide your thoughts on the T8iE's.

I using both T8ie and AK380cu.   and it sound awesome, as long as you place the T8ie correct in ear.  LOL..    It's a tough bugger.  Have to try other style tips.

Did I miss something?

"By the time you read this, the AK380 should be able to stream from Tidal, including lossless 16-bit audio via subscription. The audience for this product wouldn’t balk at the monthly fee of $25.99

Why is that when iRiver released the AK240 SS you had people saying there was sound signature differences but not when they released the Gold?

Now everybody's saying the 380 Copper sounds different but is it the material that's making it sound different?

The ak240 gold isn't actually made of gold like the ak240ss is actually made of stainless steel and ak380cu is actually made of copper. I still call shinanegans on ak claiming that it's the casing that makes the sq difference, but your guess is as good as mine as to why those versions actually sound better than the original.

The only reasonable observation would be "digitally tuned to be different" it is commons for changes in the algorithm within the software to alternate sound quality. :D

Was the AK 240 gold a plated Duralumin body?
