Are there any headphones better than the Sony MDR-7506?

It is physically similar to your 7506s (you can even swap earpads) but when it comes to sound quality, they offer far more extension and detail. One of the things I used to love about the Sonys was their bass presence. But then when I started to listen to other cans I discovered how uncontrolled the Sony's bass presentation is.

If you can, try the Beyers. It'll be like the clouds parting, the heavens shining down on you and angels singing. Ahem... okay, maybe a tad over the top.

But they present sound quality that is far and above the 7506s.

warrior your comments on the beyers has me itching to go ahead with some DT-880s despite not having heard them. They seem to be the STAR 'round these parts, right after Grados. But then again there's those Sony SA5000's picking my brain as well. People are saying their too detailed and bright. But I love details!

My budget is $500, but we better be talking about a pretty significant leap over my trusty 7506's

Anyway for frame of reference, I listen to a pretty much two genres.... Trance and 80's alternative synth rock/pop. Let me go ahead and list some of bands that pretty much stay rotated in my playlist:

1)Depeche Mode
2)The Cure
3)The Smiths
4)Simple Minds
5)theThe
6)U2
7)New Order
8)Echo and the Bunnyen
9)The Pet Shop Boys
10)Duran Duran

I am constantly listening to at least one of those bands daily. So, given those picks, what would you recommend?

These will rock your Sonys all day and night. Might not be very comfortable though, subjective there. Other Stax systems look tiny bit out of price range xD

Take a look at Audio-Technicas, even their flagship open phone which is awesome is within the price range you are stating, Beyerdynamic headphones are worth a shot although they would need an amp, Ultrasone might be to your liking...or even Sony MDR-SA5000.

I LOVE my old V6's & newer 7506's. I also loved the SR80 sound, or the SR60's with bowls. I would love to listen to MS-1's

Oh yeah by the way...let's say I *do* get the DT-880s...and I also get them balanced with the new cable. The end plugs are XLR connectors.

Problem is, the "amp/dock" for the 1616M soundcard uses 1/4" balanced inputs instead of XLR as shown in the pic below:

Is there a way I can use 1/4" tips on the balanced cable instead of XLR tips? If not, is there an adapter available?

No, that will be crap. Those outputs are already amped. and afaik, can't be converted. Do some searching on balanced, it's not just about getting a balanced adapter and plugging them into any xlr jack. A balanced setup will cost you a lot of money. Think in the thousands, not hundreds.

Also, I can't believe nobody has mentioned the ksc75!

Whooa! thats some 80's list there! nice one.

I have read reviews in which some folks prefer the 7506 to any cans at virtually any price, so it really is all subjective, and there are reviews on this site (somewhere) where some prefer the sony bass response to the big beyers. I have a pair of 7506, as well as the sennheiser hd650, which have a very different sonic signature, and have to confess that on some tracks the sonys dig deeper and crisper into the deep bass guitar, such as on tracy chapman's first two albums. The problem is that the hd650s are so smooth, rich and open sounding after the analytical sonys that i rarely use the sonys now. Imagine though, if i had upgraded from 7506 to the hd650 based on the common praise regarding hd650 bass response (which is very good), and then spun up my chapman discs!

as far as i know, the sony 7506 remain the most popular phone in music, news and press studios around the world - it never ceases to amaze me how often i see them on the head of some dude on tv or in a studio situation. for better or worse, countless famous albums have been mastered and recorded in the studio using the 7506, and for that reason i will always retain a set of 7506 as something of a reference, even if its just to remind me how smooth the hd650 are...

in summary - be mindful regarding your expectations in upgrading from the 7506, especially in areas such as bass response. some reviews on sites like this would have you believe the differences between decent phones might be 'night and day', which is rarely the case...but might be so for those with specially 'tuned ears'

Nah, you can't plus I doubt you need balancing, either unless you are feeling power-hungry. emu-1616 is a beautiful source and should do fine just the way it is with dt880.

Well it's been a while guys :)

Shortly after this thread I kinda got into other hobbies and hardly ever listened to music seriously. But now I'm back to enjoying my music collection again and consequently have been shuffling between my DT-880s and my Sony MDR-7506's.

Still loving my DT-880s after revisiting them in a long while, but man, do I still have a soft spot for my Sony MDR-7506's. Their "punch" never gets old :)

That is probably the most sensible reply I have read regarding the 7506, or any phone in general. If you like the sound of 7506 chances are you will found the upgrade to another phone a side way move. I had the Grado RS2i, no doubt it is more detailed and done something better, but it has a sonic signature and pacing that is quite different from the 7506. I doubt you will find the supposedly upgrade all positive.

Even with the Sony MDR CD900ST which share certain common design parameters as the 7506 sound different enough for me, that I would not say those who like the 7506 will necessarily like the 900ST as well. In the final event you have to listen for yourself the signature is for you.

BTW have you tried the DT250 pad mod on the 7506 ? Can't tell but that may be all you ever need.
