Are expensive headphones worth it?
Aug 17, 2011 at 11:48 PM Post #76 of 139
If you have to ask, then no. That's my general philosophy, if i look at something I want and think I would rather have it than anything else I would spend the money on, then I would say it is worth its price. Once you get past the $200 headphone range, you start reaching the point of diminishing returns pretty quickly but if spending another $500 to get that little bit closer to theoretically perfect sound is worth it to you then why not?

In my case, I was perfectly happy with my ATH-M50s unamped (used to run it straight out of my Macbook Air at school) until I got an amp for them, and I was happy with that combo until I made the mistake of trying the HD650s (which I immediately decided I had to have). Luckily I don't have any more money to throw at this particular hobby and I am very happy with my HD650s so I've just been enjoying my music lately.

LOL @ gremlin car even I can't imagine under $100 headphones as that one.

I know they are pretty bad cars, and its funny how the old commercials boasted them as such good and reliable cars (I call bs on that).

Lol my portable rig is over  $800.00. The silver cabled IE8s/UHA4 Slimline Amp/Sflo2 adds up in price. I was kinda shocked when I added the cost together. My home rig is also a bit over $800.00 as well, E9/DACport LX & Dennon AH-D5000s.

Seriously headfi messes your brain up. Ive almost hit the $700 mark on my rig. I was fortunate enough to find that one headphone that I loved with my first purchase though. I consider myself very lucky. <$100 is pocket change when I think about headphones.

This really is subjective. Depends on your musical taste, source, funds. Theres no point in going above the D2000 for me since all I listen to is dubstep really. What more do I need? Upgrading to D7000s isnt worth the subtle changes I would get from my ~320kbps music collection. And the higher up you go I feel the bass becomes too refined, much less engaging, and less fun.

It's just funny because at the time I first purchased my Denons $250 for headphones was a huge gamble. If I'd known it would escalate to this...I would have added headfi to my firewall list lol.

My portable rig will probably never exceed $200. I don't feel safe walking around with that much money, much less $800, no siree!

I feel pretty safe walking around with them as they are pretty portable and if someone wants them they're gonna have to go through me. I respect others but if you disrespect me and try to take my **** I'll go right through the person lol.

Hmm.. so you mean that there's are a big difference between D2000 and D7000, that a DIY D2000 (woodied & markl modded, just search this board) are way under D7000 in performance?

Tweaking cans in some cases are stopped because of respect/ fear of bungle it all up...

I'd be more worried of messing up expensive equipment more than the respect thing? Not sure where that comment came from lol. I'm probably gonna end up selling my Denons eventually. I prefer my ecabled IE8s in all honesty although the Denons still sound nice.

I just think it's funny that the OP's last post was way back on page 2 - and that was to apologize because we (naturally) thought he was trolling.

I'm in the same boat as many, though. When I'm browsing the FS section I don't even pause at the sub $100 cans anymore.

Sigh.

I just realized that I am now enjoying sound instead of music and I am now admiring headphones instead of the art.

If that's the case then it's probably not worth it ... but it still fun so it's up to you.

It's like what lee730 said .... you can choose Corvette or Gremlin :)

IMO, the jump from a DT880 600ohm to a T1 is HUGE!!!  and so is the cost.  Depending on your budget, it may be justifiable.

My equipment is well over the $3000 range now, but since I use my headphones at least 3-4 hours a day I think they are absolutely worth it since it makes those hours enjoyable.  The way I see it is that if I use something everyday then I may as well go for the best I can comfortably afford (ie after necessities and that I'm not borrowing money or take a big hit in the bank account to pay for it).

I'm a noob here with HiFi Headphones because I have always had the space and privacy to spend good money on my theater equip and have great money sunk into great speakers (Polk Audio).  However, I recently moved in with a roomate and looking into these threads in much the same way.  This is is how you learn, by asking questions and picking brains.  So they ask the question "are high end headphones worth it" - Transltion - it means - "I do not have access to a local Head Fi shop that specialises in Head Fi equipment where I can test and listen to all of these different levels, brands, and costs of quality headphones to be able to know the difference, so I ask here???

Stop railing the guy and be so stuck up and snotty - giving the rest of us audiofiles a bad name dude!

I actually prefer Parker/Sailor/Etc than Mont Blanc the logo lost all its worth. They have become Bose.
