Android phones and USB DACs
Feb 4, 2013 at 9:45 AM Post #1,621 of 9,526
Today's Woot! is refurb Galaxy Note 10.1's and they're about $100 off normal price.  It's been a while since I've seen anything about them in this thread, does anyone know if they have the DAC support that the SIII and Note 2 do?

Ok guys, I got my galaxy S3 sorted out (swapped the used motherboard I scored on ebay), and got it working great.. flashed with cleanrom 5.6

Now This time I did not flash a custom kernal, and playback is absolutely perfect. I am using poweramp (worth the purchase, seems like the best music player for android).
No custom configurations or setup needed, just plug right in and the phone sets itself up.

I will not ever touch fast charge, since that killed my old motherboard.

Which S3 / ROM / DAC?

I have a US Galaxy S3 (i747), using liquid smooth, assuming it's the stock kernel since I don't think liquid smooth comes with a kernel, flashed the norris audio patcher, ran usb audio pro (no other music player got audio out via usb) trial, and it does work, but glitchy choppy audio into a Fiio E17 via usb otg cable.

There's gotta be some hope somewhere that the US S3 -> otg -> e17 should work via software changes since this setup does output some audio (not very good quality yet though)

Thanks for your answer, but do you need and external battery when you connect noise isolating earphone like ue700 or 900? Or is it made for big headphones?
Do you know where I could buy an external battery and the approptiate usb cable ?

Unlike the HRT microStreamer’s amp, my Neco Soundlab V3 portable amp is self-powered.

Like the HRT microStreamer’s USB DAC, my ODAC is bus-powered.
When connecting the ODAC to the smartphone via a Belkin self-powered USB hub, the power to the ODAC is no more supplied by the smartphone, but by an external power supply: external battery or mains power adapter.

smartphone >> USB OTG cable adapter + USB cable provided by the USB hub manufacturer >> USB hub >> USB cable provided by the USB DAC manufacturer >> USB DAC

smartphone >> micro-A plug to standard-A receptacle USB OTG cable adapter + standard-A plug to mini-B plug USB cable provided by Belkin >> Belkin 4-port USB 2.0 hub >> standard-A plug to mini-B plug USB cable provided by the ODAC "manufacturer" >> ODAC

Anyone know if USB audio works when video is being run through HDMI out? Please help me justify an external DAC/amp. My fathers home theatre system doesn't do hdmi sound so if it works I have a perfectly logical reason for spending the money on head-fi gear

I'd also appreciate an answer to this. Right now, I'd probably only bother buying a mini HDMI to HDMI solution (and a subsequent HDMI switcher for the monitor) to use with my android device so I can watch HD music videos on an external monitor. However, since the audio quality is top notch, I'd still rather use an external USB DAC for the audio. Can one use an external USB DAC (audio) & HDMI (video only) simultaneously?

Thanks

Quick question, DanBa.. In the part I highlighted in red: does the Belkin hub you're using have a usb mini-b (female) port?  I thought you need to use a "usb-a to usb-a" cable between the OTG adapter & the hub?

Yes, my 4-port USB hub has one mini-B receptacle for the upstream port connecting the USB hub to the USB host, and four standard-A receptacles for the downstream ports connecting the USB hub to the USB peripherals.

"The following list explains how the plugs and receptacles can be mated:
• Series “A” receptacle mates with a Series “A” plug. Electrically, Series “A” receptacles function as
outputs from host systems and/or hubs.
• Series “A” plug mates with a Series “A” receptacle. The Series “A” plug always is oriented towards
the host system.
• Series “B” receptacle mates with a Series “B” plug (male). Electrically, Series “B” receptacles
function as inputs to hubs or devices.
• Series “B” plug mates with a Series “B” receptacle. The Series “B” plug is always oriented towards
the USB hub or device.
• Series “mini-B” receptacle mates with a Series “mini-B” plug (male). Electrically, Series “mini-B”
receptacles function as inputs to hubs or devices.
• Series “mini-B” plug mates with a Series “mini-B” receptacle. The Series “mini-B” plug is always
oriented towards the USB hub or device."

Danba, you've been quite keen on using battery packs with your portable rig.  The theoretical improvements are certainly there.  And I know power conditioning can, at times, greatly improve the performance of some desktop gear.  But does it really make an audible difference with these portables?  I've yet to hear either the Pico or Headstreamer sound any different connected to any device, be it computer or phone.  But I've not had a chance to try one of those battery packs, so I can't say with authority.  Rather, I remain skeptical.

Sound quality is not consistent from one person to the next as our ears are different.

Some portable rig tweakings:

ok guys... I swear I started reading this whole post to try and find my answer but when I saw 109 pages I accepted my defeat ;o)

I am a complete noob to quality cans.  I just bought an internally modded D2k from swimsonny.  I am very excited but I also would like to get an amp as I have been told they help greatly with the D2K's.  I am normally hiking or outside in a hammock.  I want a nice one but portability is important...

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks

Hey man. Here's a couple of points that might help you along:

1). The D2ks are great headphones (according to their reputation), but they are not going to be much good at all for something like hiking. They won't stay on your head particularly well and they leak sound like a mug. Might work for the hammock though!

2). What kind of source device (= probably your phone) do you have? Right now there are only a handful of phones that will allow the use of an external DAC, so if you don't have one of those, it will completely change the answer you get here. This thread in particular is about the devices that work with external DACs, so if you don't have one of those, you'll probably find better information elsewhere.

3). What's your price range? As with all things in life, what you get is largely dependent on how much you're willing to spend

4). If you're looking for answers around Head-Fi, there are a TON of threads, subforums, links to other sites, etc to navigate around. And frankly, the search function here isn't worth a hoot in my opinion. So if I'm looking for something on HF, I'll go to Google, type in what I'm looking for, and add "site:head-fi.org" to the end, so Google will search HF for that string. For example: "denon d2000 portable amp site:head-fi.org", although you don't include the quotation marks. I've found this to be VASTLY more useful than the general search function here.

5). And in case nobody's told ya yet: Welcome to Head-Fi!!! Sorry about your wallet
size]

It might be good to do the Googling first and then come back with some questions once you've done a little reading. (If you need help figuring out where to look, PM me and I'll try to point you in the right direction). Congrats on the new cans!!!

Correct on all counts, they are not portable, and will fall off your head, don't isolate too well, and leak sound. They also aren't built tough, and the cable is too long and inflexible for portable use.
There is a link in my sig explaining what to look for in amps for Denons. Start their, but not many portable amps are mentioned - because its not a portable can. But from there you will know what to look for.

So far, like the quad-core Exynos powered Galaxy S III, the new quad-core Exynos powered Samsung Galaxy Note II can work with the FiiO E7, the iBasso D12, Leckerton UHA-6S MKII, the ODAC, … ; had some issue with the HeadAmp Pico (bug fixed by HeadAmp); and doesn’t work with the FiiO E17 using the stock USB audio driver.

So, in regard to the USB protocol, the behaviour of the Galaxy Note II is likely identical to the behaviour of the Galaxy S III.

A list of standard USB DAC reportedly interworking with the Android-powered smartphone Samsung Galaxy S III:

stock Samsung Galaxy S III > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable (micro-A plug inserted into the S III) >> standard USB DAC >> amp >> headphones

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as my source.  I'm looking to add a Fiio DAC/amp.  I really prefer the feature set of the E17 over the E07, but as of now it doesn't appear to work with my source.  Is there a possibility the E17 will work in the near future?  If so, would the only update be available through the root/mod route, or could it potentially be a software fix supplied by Samsung for non-root users or on Fiio's end?  At this point I'd prefer to leave my Note 2 stock but if I end up having to root it, so be it.  I've read through many of these threads but don't really know if it's worth waiting.

I have USB Audio Recorder Pro installed and that's fine for my own music loaded on the SD card.  However, I listen to a bunch of streaming music through Grooveshark, Spotify, etc. and want to purchase a DAC/amp that isn't only limited to using the USB Audio Recorder software.

I have also read a bit about the upcoming E18.  Could that be worth the wait for my situation?  Due to the fact it's aimed at Android devices does anyone know if that means it more than likely won't play nice with Windows-based PCs?  I listen mostly through my Note 2 but don't want to lose the ability to work with my home/work PC.

Thanks in advance for any insight and I aologize in advance if this has been answered and I failed to find the answer during my search.
