So I just wanted to add that I've sort of paused using my S4 with a CM11-based rom to listen to music through my Intruder because there seems to be a good amount of what I would call jitter in the audio. That is, there are (perhaps single sample) tick noises in the output... maybe one every few seconds. It seems to be a persistent problem that doesn't to go away despite closing apps etc.

I'm proper bummed about it, too, because I had just gone to lengths to figure out how to SMB-mount my music collection over the 802.11ac Wi-Fi, index it with aMPD, and use all sorts of fun tools that I've found and written to find/play music on my phone. I super <3 using MPD to play music on all my devices, and having it on my phone is quite excellent.

A word of warning: MPD is not the most user-friendly player. Unless you want to get in the weeds a bit, it might not be for you. If you are curious, though, check out aMPD and Mupeace in the Play Store.

I should be getting a Meridian Explorer tomorrow. Let's see if that plays any better. (DanBa's list says it works with UARP, so I'm optimistic that it will work with CM11.)

Even with USB Audio Player PRO / USB Audio Recorder PRO?

Not tried USB Audio Recorder Pro but with USB Audio Player Pro, I don't get the Herus lighting up even.

What is the 'sony USB DAC cable'? I have an Xperia Z and am having a great deal of trouble getting my Fiio E07K to work reliably...

Sony WMC-NWH10 cable. Does the Xperia Z have a WM-port? I think this cable is for Walkmans. I don't know anything about their phones though.

Alas, I do not even know what a WM port is...

Oh, it's a Sony proprietary port...kinda like Apple's 30 pin or Lightning connector port.

Hi all, I have not read the 260 pages of this thread, so maybe I won't bring anything new... but just in case,

I found an app on Google Play called USB Audio player (from extream soft dev) that can play audio files on an external DAC even if your device doesn't have external DAC support.  Your device only needs to support OTG.

There is a free trial version that would allow you to test it before you buy it.

Enjoy!

That's been covered already and quite well established here that it's even been abbreviated to UAAP/uapp here. That's the same app as what you've mentioned.

I think so, because we do not touch the original audio except for software volume control if it is enabled.

Weird!

As far as I understand, the USB Audio soft driver of USB Audio Recorder PRO / USB Audio Player PRO is the same.
And this USB Audio soft driver is compliant with the Resonessence Labs Herus (i.e. the developers from eXtream Software Development and from Resonessence Labs have the same understanding of the USB Audio specification).

And as the Samsung Galaxy J SC-02F is working with a Tralucent Dac Amp One prototype, its USB host feature is functional (i.e. the developers from Samsung have implemented a USB host feature compliant with USB DAC):

If the connection procedure is correct (i.e. "Important: connect your device BEFORE starting the app, otherwise it will not get detected!"), my guess is that the Samsung Galaxy J SC-02F rejects the Herus at the USB enumeration stage when the Herus likely requires 500 mA (i.e. a USB DAC may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads, 500 mA, from a port in USB 2.0.), because the Samsung Galaxy J can’t provide 500 mA.
If my guess is correct, then a powered USB hub has to be added:

Samsung Galaxy J >> USB OTG cable >> powered USB hub >> Resonessence Labs Herus

Darn. While the Meridian Explorer does work with UARP/UAPP, CM11 is unable to use it directly for some reason.

I wonder if enhancements to CM11's functionality would make it work, ever.
