The K601 is still listed on their website, so I doubt it has been discontinued:

Notice the retouched product picture (no "Made in Austria" anymore):

Interesting.  When I go through AKG's portal and select USA as the region they're no longer listed though, internationally though they are . . .

It's a shame, wondering if the China made ones sound different.  Mine are from Austria.

I bought a K601 a few weeks ago new and it's Made in Austria. Number 19700 something.

Also, I did just also confirm that the K702 and Q701 have the same capsule part # after someone earlier mentioned it. Here's what I've noted:

K702/Q701 "Capsule DKK45": 2400Z00080

K701 "Capsule DKK45": 2400Z0007

It still is possible that minor tweaks on the Q701's shell (if there is any changes) can effect the sound. Maybe the internal wire of the cable is different. Yes, based on my experience, a cable can make those kind of changes (Canare can do this). It's basically incredibly easy to make minor changes without changing the driver as most of you know. Someone feel free to see if any other parts (that could change the sound) have changed between the K702 and Q701.

I hope somewhere else online more frequency graphs and reviews show up. I'm not about to go out and buy a Q701 though. It sure would be nice if my K702's treble was a bit more toned down without EQ. Still burning them in...if there is actually any change by the 100 hour mark I'll be surprised.

I am surprised, as a person from the AKG service department told me last week they have different drivers... in regards the top end of my Q701s I somehow don't have the feeling that it should be less, it already feels pretty "silky smooth". At least I somehow can't relate the things people say about the K701 to this pair of headphones.

Went back to original pads.  Another 100hours later, whoo baby do these things thump on electronic.

I noticed this too on my K702 after about 70-80 hours of burn-in. Felt like I was getting much more mid-bass too

I also have a pair of K702's with over 1000hours of playtime.  Clearly, there is a definite bump of midbass in the Q701's, not only in quantity but impact.  Thankfully for it's design, it doesn't muddle the mids.  A very fun headphone.  Of course, being powered by the Lyr helps also.

Several hours later for the phones, and several days later for my ears and brain, I remain very impressed with the Q701 (on a Cardas cable). A-B'ing them briefly against the mighty Denon D7000, both driven by my best amp, the Rudi RPX300, made me prefer the AKG by a narrow margin. The Denon phones have the upper hand in frequency extension. (I've listened to the naysayers carefully, yes, I really have, but I remain convinced that they're wrong: the D7000 bass is just perfect. Admittedly, there is some margin for reasonable disagreement here within the bounds of "neutrality".) But the Q701 acquitted themselves impressively well in mid-bass "weight". And then they walked all over the Denon's in soundstaging width and three-dimensionality. It was a tie as far as imaging depth. In the low highs, the AKG is a tiny bit "splashier". It's also somewhat less extended in the upper highs -- not an obvious flaw at all.

I'm glad I don't have to choose between them. But, if I did...I just might pick the AKG.

Just curious on how hard these are to amp versus the K701s.  I'm going to be getting a Fiio E7 as an external soundcard and amp and I'm curious if this is in any way powerful enough to justify buying these over say Audio Technica AD900s for ~$50 less on Amazon.  I'd like to keep the entire purchase around $400 and the E7 is $100 exactly and the AKGs are $279 on Amazon.
