Don't be too tricked into that. Goes along with the curse. Take the time to enjoy what you have now and upgrade down the road. Always bear in mind that the higher up the chain you go, the higher up you need to go with source equipment to really appreciate the investment - K701s cost me $2000 in stereo equipment!

Say no to FLABBY BASS!

K501s are my current "reference" cans. I'm looking longingly at some DT880s though.

Get them... if you like the K501, you should love the DT880 (bass goes lower and a bit more of it, but still very tight and without any midbass hump).

Just wondering, but is anyone else turned off by the K240S? It seems like a compromised K240 monitor with low impedance and intentionally bumped up bass for the ipod crowd.

quote from HeadRoom's website on the K240S:

Although these headphones share the same numerical appellation as the 240M and 240DF, they are not designed for true reference use.

Today is the moment of truth. I'll be plugging my K1000s into my newly acquired PPX3-6SN7-SLAM. And my Grado RS-2s. Let's see which pair wins.

I've been really impressed with the K1000s out of my el cheapo receiver/amplifier, and have preferred them to the RS-2 by a little margin, but tonight I'll see what these cans are really capable of.

I have owned a lot of different headphones but out of all of them I never owned a AKG headphone. I will have the AKG 501 here by tomorrow or FRI. and am hoping to use it mostly for my TV Movie listening. I am looking forward to its large sound stage and great mid range. I feel that movie listening is mostly all mids and thought the 501 might be great for that use. Any thoughts on this.
Oh does anyone know the size of the drivers? Like 40 mm or 50 mm?

The K501 indeed has gorgeous mids but I don't think it'll matter when in comes to movies (except possibly some silent movies, documentaries, artsy stuff, and so on).
I haven't used the K501 to watch a movie for a long time but I remember it simply didn't sound right because of the K501's unique sound signature and unbalanced FR. Perhaps this was a burn-in issue and the other versions of the K501* may be better for movies so YMMV. I doubt amplification was an issue but for what it's worth I wasn't using a dedicated amp either.

*half of the holes around the driver of my K501 are open and I've got grey foam under my pads

If a hole is not open, is it still a hole?

Indeed!

K701-wise, my problem has been exactly the opposite. They can have very powerful, appropriate bass, and most well-recorded music just sings. But at the 400 hour mark, they lack that elusive "slam." I don't think that's going to evolve, though I suppose I should be happy for the great sound I already have....

enjoying my k240-sextet, k271, and k501, but still drawn to those dirty old senn's once in a while.

lately the 501's have my attention the most.
This pair seems to have reasonable bass to them (black pad backs, before anyone asks

).
Maybe my last pair was made differently, perhaps this pair being used has had more burn-in, or maybe it is the hybrid amp making the difference. All I know is if they had a bit more body to the bass . . . . (re-cable? better amp? K701??)

Oh, and the velour earpads are looking yummy, must get some for al my AKG's
