AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!
Oct 29, 2014 at 5:02 AM Post #1,652 of 2,435
I had a K612 but did not find it to be as great as experienced by some in these forum. There was a fine layer of grain to the overall sound and details are obviously behind some other cans at this price level. I wonder if it is because my pair was made in China, in contrast to the claim that certain AKG phones are made in Australia.

Out of interest, what do you prefer at the same price level?

I found Beyer DT150, Soundmagic HP150, Sony CD900ST, Sony MDR7506, to name a few, all have better details and clarity than my China made K612. Also for slightly higher price, the NAD HP50 completely outcast the K612 in terms of details and clarity. That is not to say that these phones are better phones than K612, as it is always a matter of preference and the K612 do have quite a different sound signature to some of these phones.

Interestingly they're all closed back (I think). Maybe you just prefer that?

I'm not entirely sure what 'China made' has to do with it.

What amplifier did you have the for K612?

Those I listed are phones in the same price range as the K612. I did had some open phones like the Grado RS2i, but those are more than twice as expensive and not really comparable.

I mainly used the 2 volt output of the Burson Conductor SL with the K612.

If it is not a matter of quality due to different countries of origin, then I could have got a faulty pair.

Are you from the US? I've noticed that the K612 are much more expensive there than Europe. In the UK:
For example:
612 pro: £115
Soundmagic HP150: £170
DT150: £136
Sony CD900ST: ~£150
MDR7506: £90

It's interesting that the pricing is so much lower in the UK. I paid £112 for mine. That's cheaper than all the headphones you mentioned apart from the 7506. The Soundmagics are £170 over here which is a lot more.

Had mine for some time now and feel it's really hit or miss with these but thankfully it been mostly hits. Luckily I have 4 amps on hand because these didn't play nice with 2 out of the 4. My Beresford amp\DAC and Purity Audio amp run and hide with this headphone and if I only had those two I would most definitely have a totally different opinion. I believe most if not all the people who have issue with this headphone just have the wrong amp and\or possibly the wrong DAC. This headphone also has an issue with its sound signature that causes some even well recorded music to sound unpleasing to my ear. They also have no mercy on poorly recorded material. Overall though they are very revealing, have excellent detail, are fast on their feet with good bass IMHO. My Little Dot amp simply loves them and is my go to amp with them but my O2 can handle them as well on the higher gain setting. I also eq them which helped with the "2K hump".
Other thoughts are the cable feels cheap and this headphone deserves a better quality feeling cable but unfortunately it is hard wired. They are extremely comfortable to me and feel light on the head. Clamp force is just about perfect for me but I do have a large head. At first I was going to give up on them and just sell them off but on the advise of a couple fellow head-fier's I gave them a chance and when the stars align this headphone can sound very good. Is it worth it? Having to find the right amp...the right recording and deal with the other short comings? Time will tell...

No, I am in Asia. I got myself a pair of K612 made in China because of the proximity of the regions. Thanks for letting me know the lower prices in Europe anyway.

I also had a Purity Audio amp - the KICAS Caliente. Folks at this forum are running the K712 on this amp with good results but I guess the K612 is another story.

The Purity Audio was slightly better if I remember correctly, it was pretty bad though. I only listened for a couple of minutes before coming to the conclusion these amps were not going to cut it. Maybe the 712 is easier to drive.
