The weirdest part is this family was featured on an episode of Wifeswap. When I saw video of the balloon the father from that episode immediately came to mind, maybe I had subconsciously recognized his name.. I dunno but I was pretty shocked when I found out it was that whackjob's creation. Those kids were funny as hell too.

Considering their reality show history, possibly a not-so-elaborate ploy for attention?

I guess they got bored of meteorological storms, so they're making their own media storm, perhaps.

The little bitty bit of conspiracy theorist in me wonders too. The Father has a bit too much past attention whoring to dismiss the thought.

Funny, I just mentioned that as a joke, but you never know...

You can't go wrong with Islamo-fascist-nazi-socialist liberals. Islamo-fascist-nazi-socialist liberals are the 'little black dress' of contemporary sociopolitical scape-goats. [Damn, it would be scape-goatees, wouldn't it?]

It could never be because he was home-schooled in a community where folks will just nod their heads and say, "Sumppum didn't look right about that boy. And those people didn't go to church on Sundays neither."

Sounds like it was a hoax and a publicity stunt.

Also, a six year old likely weighs 40-50lbs. Not an insignificant load for a balloon designed to carry a few instruments. I'd be surprised if it took off at all with that much extra weight.

And if it was a gimmick, I sure hope the family can foot the bill for search and rescue teams.

Funny.

But as the father of a little boy that age, I can tell you his parents' reaction is more likely to be to never stop holding him. Moral of the story: If you're going to screw up as a little boy, screw up in a way that scares the living daylights out of your parents.

I thought they were sending a small boy with a video camera around the USA to video people wearing headphones from the sky.

Hah, I can see it now...
