I'd also take the k501 over the k701 (which is a great phone in its own right), especially for jazz. You need good amplification, but I found the k501 to be significantly less picky than the k701. the k501 has a bigger soundstage, more precise imaging and is more neutral, while the k701 has a smaller (but very accurate) soundstage and a buttery liquid aspect to its overall sound.
 
That said, I'd try to get a used ath: ad2000, w1000/5000 or if you don't mind the small size an esw10jpn.

Yes, the 501 will be less picky at 150ohm especially with tubes. but if you're Solid State guy the K701/2 are the way to go for more accurate resolution.

Ditto.  For acoustic jazz, and jazz vocals, the K501 are superior to the K70x, IMHE.

.... i think i stick with my grado325is and my little dot I for a while..but i am thinking i will buy me some Grado RS-1i in the near future.......
