Etymotic Research EVO impressions and discussion thread
I agree with these impressions, and I really love my EVO. But I really missed what you call the etched aspect of the ER4 sound. I've switched to brown filters, which for me are giving a pretty good best-of-both experience.- episiarch

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...
Yes. I have a few sets, from a couple different makers, in about three different material/finish combinations. TLDR, they're nice but I don't use them as much as I thought I would. The drivers and cable stick out awkwardly. And while the fit is comfortable, it's pretty effortful to get them in...- episiarch

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...
It's really unfortunate that the filter-change instructions seem no longer discoverable on the website. But here's a link to the ER4 instructions with filter change on pages 8-9 (and it's the same procedure on all Etys). If you've never changed your filters, this is definitely the first thing...- episiarch

Replacing Etymotic ER-4S?
I'd say get ER4-SR. ER-4S was my reference sound since around 2001 – and then ER4-SR came out, and I love it more. It's very much the same style of tuning, and available new with 2-year warranty.- episiarch

CanJam London 2022 Impressions Thread (July 30-31, 2022)
The xMEMS, yes. I didn't notice/realise it had a thicker cable! But yes, quad driver and to my ears an amazingly open and clean sound, even compared to other etys, even compared to Evo. I just loved it.- episiarch

CanJam London 2022 Impressions Thread (July 30-31, 2022)
xMEMS was also a huge highlight of the show for me. Absolutely astounding. Etymotics are my personal reference sound (I'm a 4SR person) and the xMEMS demo unit did not suffer in comparison. And the xMEMs bass had noticeably more authority – when the drums came in on the Hell Freezes Over version...- episiarch

CanJam London 2022 (July 30-31, 2022)
From the hotel walk directly out the door, which points you toward the river. Couldn't be easier. Head toward the river and the London Eye (the, um, slightly oversized ferris wheel – hard to miss). Instead of crossing the river, turn right and just walk along the waterfront pathway, Take in the...- episiarch

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
Only the angled ones have worked for me to get me close to stock sound. It's reassuring that you said you made your K550 ugly already. The angled ovals make the headphones stick out in a fairly unattractive way. I tried lots of alternatives, but to get a similar-to-stock sound without the...- episiarch

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
There's no problem with big earpads in general. Just in my experience this headphone doesn't like them much. What now: go with Hogweed's recommendation and ignore mine.- episiarch

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
In my experience K550 is really sensitive to earpad selection. In particular, earpads that enclose more volume of air behind them than the stock/originals make it lose bass in a hurry. (Likewise pads that don't seal that volume very well – like velour or perforated pads.) The result is an...- episiarch

AKG N700NC Wireless Over-Ear
I have been looking for something with single-sided cable entry (less cumbersome at my desk) and this quality and type of sound. Can I ask: Is yours the N700NC or the N700NCM2? For avoidance of doubt – when you say with the cable on, you mean an analog cable, not USB, right?- episiarch

Periodic Audio IEMs Mg, Ti, Be, C
Wow, the new models are great. It's early minutes with my new Mgs (yes I'm a weirdo who likes Mg best), but sound is very noticeably clearer than on my previous-model Mgs – Dan wasn't kidding about deadening the resonances of the former model. So, so, great sounding! The new shape enables a bit...- episiarch

USB-C to 3.5mm adapters (DAC) - Let's find the best
Agreed, Rhodium is terrific. Limited in driving power, but I found it shockingly good sounding for something so minimal. Paired with the Nickel amp it opens up a lot.- episiarch

Lightning to micro USB alternatives (aka tired of bulky Apple cables)
Hiby has a Lightning / USB-C cable that works with my iPhone 10 Pro Max and 2019 iPad Mini. Yes I know this is the USB-micro thread, and I haven't tried it with any USB-micro adaptors, but with a native USB-C DAC it works fine. And it's inexpensive and non-bulky. I ordered direct from Hiby and... -
Chord Mojo 2 Thread ___ [product released January 31, 2022 -- starting on page 95 of thread]
As I see it, Mojo 2 is gated by Thermal headroom. An FPGA that delivers more compute in the same power/thermal envelope. Pricing headroom. That more capable FPGA has to be roughly as affordable. Rob's time. Operating in Mojo's tight power, pricing, and product positioning constraints requires...- episiarch

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
Here are Brainwavz angled oval pads in pleather, mounted on K550. As you can see, the inner hole retains a good deal of oval-ness even after the pads are fitted onto the round K550 mounting surface. This – or the sheepskin variant, I have both – is the only deeper / more comfortable...- episiarch

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
In my experience K550 bass suffers badly not only when there's not a seal, but when the air volume within the earcup gets too large, as has been my experience with most aftermarket pads that provide more spacing and cushion. The only exception I've found is the Brainwavs angled oval pads in...- episiarch

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...
I am also a jazz and vocals listener, and for my tastes I would immediately pick ER3SE. ER4S is great, but a little bit thin sounding and IMO really wants good amplification. ER4P(T) has always been wrong-sounding to me. I go through a song or two thinking "why don't I like this? This is fine"...- episiarch
