Haven't played with the rockbox yet, but I still love my Karma; gapless and codec choices are quite good, while it may not support ALAC it does do FLAC (yes I know Rockbox does too), and it does all the formats gaplessly, has RioDJ which really is sweet, and one of the best OTF playlisting tools...

MP3 is inherently not a gapless standard as was previously pointed out above. However, the Karma does a great job of making it sound gapless to the point that you would never know the difference. Battery life, roughly: MP3: 15+ hours OGG: ~10 hours FLAC: ~11 hours
