Legacy amps and their modern-day "comps"

I'd love to hear from the amp-experienced folk on this topic: Has an older but once venerated amp such as the HeadRoom Max been totally eclipsed by modern offerings in the same category (in other words, I don't want to compare it to tube amps, for example)? What are the aspects of amps that have...

HeadAmp Max vs. more "modern" options?

Specifically for Grado PS500e, overkill? Occasionally use AKG 701’s as well, but prefer the Grado.

HeadAmp Max vs. more "modern" options?

Given how long ago they were originally built, would you consider the HeadRoom Max balanced amp is still a stellar piece of equipment, or is it outmoded and outgunned by more modern amps? What would the difference be, and are there comparable modern equivalents? Also, how would you say it stacks...

    B&W p7 left channel failure

yeah, I was hoping to avoid having to do the B&W thing. I just can't figure out how to open them beyond the first level of just taking off the magnetic earpad.

    B&W p7 left channel failure

I recently returned to my pair of Bowers and Wilkins P7 (original, not wireless) after a long absence, only to discover that the left channel is not working. Switched cables, plugs, etc. but the left persistently fails. I haven't been able to discern how to open up the cup beyond that first...

Corda HA1 Mk II fuse questions

My Corda HA1 Mk II has ceased to power up. When I opened it up to check fuses, one was bad, the other was not. What confused me was that they were differently rated fuses (one was T50mAL 250v and the other was T125mAL 250v). Since I bought this amp pre-owned, it never occurred to me to open it...

Bowers & Wilkins P5 portable (ProAudio Monitors) Review

Long time reading to discover very little about the phones.  Frustrated.  Father's Day is coming . . .

    The Grado HF2--It's For Real

so, I've been away (from here) since last August - and even then, I was pretty clueless. It seems I've missed some important stuff, and this is big news. Do we know when these things will be available>? Are they available? Did we finally have the big war and the Statue of Liberty is covered in...

    Bartok Concerto for Orchestra

Thanks, everybody - I am excited to work through several of the aforementioned. I downloaded a version with the young Gustavo Dudamel conducting - he's amazing for his age, and the recording is actually a live performance of the LA Symphony Orchestra, where he is now going to be conducting. My...

    Bartok Concerto for Orchestra

I need a recommendation for Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. I just saw an amazing segment of Great Performances where the piece was featured, and it reminded me of how much I like and admire the work. I have Pierre Boulez conducting the NY Philharmonic, but I doubt it's the best of the bunch...

    conspiracy?

So, two hours into our trip north, the pack-in cheapo headphones that came with our new Disney car dvd player fell out of the car in a parking lot, and we subsequently and unwittingly drove over them, crushing them and ending their earthly existence. My son, the former benefactor of the free...

whats in your cd player right now....

Edgar Meyer's self-titled album - it is a great recording, and interesting music to boot, though I am not sure it got great reviews. The recording is a great headphone listen, and I really think it's pretty stunning for something recorded in his home.

Do you guys clean the most expensive part of the audiophile setup, your ears?

    Alessandro ms-2 vs Grado sr225

I had the 225's and traded them shortly after I received my MS2i. The Alessandros correct the deficiencies of the 225's - the bass is more robust through the lower register without being boomy, the treble is crisp with no edge that the 225's demonstrated, and the mids are silkier. They just seem...

    Most glorious female voice ever?

Six pages and no Sarah Vaughn? I am going to assume that everybody figured she was already on here somewhere. They didn't call her "Divine" for nothing. Ok, ok, I'll calm down. Lots of other great suggestions, though. No fault there (except Celine - no can do).

    Your favorite Steely Dan album

I'm inclined to put Aja ahead of Gaucho as a work of art, though I like the variety and sense of humor on Katy Lied. The song Katy Lied seesms to belong on Aja, musically and sonically speaking - at least that's what I've always felt. It's one of the very best songs they recorded, and Phil Woods...
