Decware makes a terrific triode preamp, the CSP2, which I own. It also is a very nice headphone amp. And Single Power headphone amps make very good pre's. When another pre that I was using at the time went under, I used my PPX3 as a pre in my system with great results.

Get the Hornet and don't look back. You've already spent big bucks for the e500's. Now get an amp that has great synergy with them, as well as many other headphones. Plus, unlike the Xin amps, you'll be dealing with a great guy who believes in customer service, and you'll get your amp fast.

the imod sounds great, and that's all i care about. a separation of a few seconds between songs is a non issue to me. if you want the best sound by far from an ipod, you do the imod, period.

you'll be fine with a refurb imod. vinnie does a great job, and really, about the only thing that can go wrong is a bad battery, which can be replaced. so if that's the only thing that's holding you back i'd say go for it, because you'll be blown away by what vinnie does to that little box.
