X-Fi, CMSS3D-Headphone, and distortion
I'm trying to help out some guy posting on the Creative forums. He says he is using HD555s for gaming, and that CMSS3D-Headphone makes everything muddy and "horrible". My intuition is that the distortion introduced by the DSP is simply more noticible with "audiophile" cans compared to cheaper...- thomase

e2c soft flex sleeves
All three types of sleeves were included with my new E2Cs. The soft flex variety seem a bit more difficut to get on than the others. I know that the nozzles on the E3C/E4C/E5C are a bit smaller than the E2C AND that soft flex for the the E2C is relatively new. Is it possible that the soft flex...- thomase

e2c case cable spool (and other questions)
I emailed Shure, telling them of my concern about bending the wires around the spool. They are sending me a non-spooled case at no charge. I suppose avoiding the risk of having to send a replacement when and if they do break is worth it.- thomase

e2c case cable spool (and other questions)
First question: I've heard reports that the integrated spool in the e2c case can result in damage to the cord. How do I remove it? It LOOKS like it is removable, but I'm afraid of braking it... Second question: I bought the e2c primarily to save my ears at the gym and on flights. I have...- thomase

Program that simulates 5.1 in headphones?
Just to make sure you have everything right... There should be 3 outputs on the back of your card with symbols that looks something like this: ((--))--> The are labeled 1, 2, and 3. The 1st is the front left and front right channels, the second is the rear left and rear right channels...- thomase

Program that simulates 5.1 in headphones?
Are you even setting the speaker settings to 5.1? What kind of material are you playing back? For a basic Audigy 2 install, do the following: 1) Remove EVERYTHING - ie. uninstall ALL drivers and software. 2) Download the new Beta drivers and the Audio Console application. 3) Install the...- thomase

Dude, this is getting WAY more complicated than it needs to be... Do you have a retail version of the card? If so, do you still have the installation CD that came with it?- thomase

Dolby Headphone MODE 1 Impulse Response FOR YOU !
How did you get this? Did you measure it or otherwise reverse-engineer it? I thought the "magic" of Dolby Headphone was not necessarily the impulse response but the algorithm used to implement the associated 7000-tap FIR. Is this file really a 145ms impluse response, and if so, is it possible...- thomase

earphones for wife
Its not really sound quality that I'm concerned with, but rather good isolation which allows a lower listening volume. Both the earbuds and the ones she uses are more or less open. I know she listens at loud volumes to drown out ambient noise. I'm concerned about her hearing being damaged...- thomase

earphones for wife
My wife uses her iRiver player every day on the bus and in the gym. She doesn't use the stock earbuds because they don't stay in, so she uses a relatively cheap pair of Sony over-the-head in-the-ear headphones (kind of like this ). I'm thinking it might be better for her to use REAL earphones...- thomase

Sounblaster - No Sub Output in Games?
Games don't generally produce a separate sub channel output. You need to enable the bass redirection/crossover on the soundcard itself. A problem with the Creative forums is that the rate of creation of new threads is so high that some questions get bumped off the front page before many...- thomase

Dolby Headphone vs CMSS3D-Headphone
Apparently, the new C-Media 8788 is bundled with Dolby Headphone, which will be used for "3D gaming sounds". I wonder if this means that they are using the Dolby Headphone algorithms for DirectSound3D/OpenAL. If so, I wonder if they are using it "as is" or adding the ability to virtualize more...- thomase

Dolby Headphone vs CMSS3D-Headphone
I tried to compare the two using the THX optimizer multichannel sound test on the Starwars II DVD, but for some reason, PowerDVD 6.0 doesn't let me play the THX optimizer. So instead I played a few scenes. It was hard to tell a difference in quality of positioning. One thing I did notice...- thomase

In-depth Preview of the new Soundblaster X-Fi
I've been hearing people complaining that EAX effects are virtually inaudible in BF2 when set to "High" quality. "Ultra High" is only avaialable with the X-Fi. I have also heard that crackers have discovered that essentially, on the "High" setting, the code deliberately turns down the level of...- thomase
