MB SPDIF OUT to Digital adapter
I made a bracket several years ago for coax SPDIF with a spare RCA jack and wire. Optical out is another issue.- merc82

Setting up Transit and FFDshow AC3/DTS
Try setting the default audio rendered to "Wave" instead of "direct sound" in the system tab of AC3filter. I also checked "use SPDIF" in the main tab. I assume you're using a optical fibre cable to pass the 5.1 signal to your AV receiver. I've been using a Transit for more than a year and...- merc82

Dolby to stereo software?
Did you configure the software DVD player to use two speakers? I haven't had this problem with WinDVD nor PowerDVD. In AC3filter v1.01a you must specify two speakers in the output option of the main tab otherwise you'll get the audio from the left and right front only. You would use AC3filter...- merc82

Dolby/DTS Pass-Thru Not Working with M-Audio Transit
I also have a problem getting Dolby/DTS 5.1 audio out through my Transit to my AV receiver when playing DVDs with PowerDVD. I've verified SPDIF is selected in the player and DD/DTS passthru in the Transit's control panel. The Info panel in PowerDVD says: Multispeaker Audio Device: M-Audio...- merc82

M-Audio Transit Problem?
I've had mixed results with my Transit. I haven't had any clipping or distortion playing two channel audio and I've left the latency at medium. My issues are with 5.1 audio. When ever I try to play a DVD with DD/DTS out the CPU is 100% busy and I have to kill the player. They work fine in 2...- merc82

USB or PCMCIA CPU usage
Good to hear the CPU load wasn't significant. I was actually referring to the Sonica 5.1 which no longer has a web page on M-Audio's site though the manuals are still available for download. There's a review and photo here, Sonica 5.1 review. Thanks for the feed back.- merc82

a turntable repair question
I have a Dual CS508 that hummed until I replaced the interconnects. I replaced the spade on the ground wire too as some on the strands had broke. I responded to a similar complaint someone had about this time last year. Try jiggling the cable when you hear the hum. You should keep the sound low...- merc82

USB or PCMCIA CPU usage
Thanks for the reply. I see you have the M-Audio Transit which I guess is the replacement for the Sonica 5.1 with added audio in functionality. Do you have any experience playing DVDs or Divx/Xvid with 5.1 sound out through the Transit? The CPU can take a hit playing those compressed videos...- merc82

USB or PCMCIA CPU usage
I'm interested in a sound card for my laptop PC. Price and availability leave me with the SB Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA, M-Audio Sonica 5.1 USB, SB Audigy 2 NX USB and Zalman ZM-RSSC USB (distant choice due to limited information). My main use would be for for video soundtracks. I want to transfer...- merc82

Portapro in Montreal
Futureshop had them on their website as recently as Boxing week. They had them reduced to $50 so I picked up a pair at an Ottawa store. I saw they were removed from the website so I checked the store last time I was in there, maybe three weeks ago, and they were still on the shelf but at full...- merc82

DAC...huh??
Would you not need a CD player with digital outputs to use an external DAC? It makes sense to me that any signal from the analog output of the player is already converted by the player's DAC. What are the important specs to view when determining the quality of a DAC? Both my DVD player and...- merc82

Winamp vs. Foobar
Does foobar2000 sound better than other players? No. Most of "sound quality differences" people "hear" are placebo effect (at least with real music), as actual differences in produced sound data are below their noise floor (1 or 2 last bits in 16bit samples). Foobar2000 has sound processing...- merc82

is it worth? wav files on mp3
I still rip a disc to wav files and then encode the files to MP3. I suppose I do this from habit since the best rippers weren't necessarily good at encoding "back in the day". Lame can be integrated into EAC so ripping and encoding is one step. I believe you may need to download EAC and Lame...- merc82

is it worth? wav files on mp3
I also prefer to rip with EAC and use Lame to encode to MP3. My preferred Lame preset is - alt preset extreme. It's a variable bitrate setting that gives excellent sound quality with a decent file size. You should consider the source when choosing your bitrate. I choose a lower bitrate if I'm...- merc82

My free, "dumpster" turntable
Check out the Dual Classics web site: http://www.compassnet.com/concept/index.html I have a CS508 but need to replace the patch cords one of these days. The wire is broken up inside and causes terrible buzzing. (It was the DIY cables on this forum that caught my eye). Maybe I'll get a new...- merc82
