Dedicated Computer Specs - HIGH END
"Now I need to correct a couple of things: First, Aluminum ABSOLUTELY conducts heat better than steel. Whether or not this makes any difference in case temperatures is another topic (bottom line: not really). Inversely, you are correct that aluminum is "noisier" (i.e. it has a lower internal...- Lynn

Dedicated Computer Specs - HIGH END
Ah, by modern I mean a CPU that understands how to throttle down power consumption based upon load. I am aware the CPU I have for power users is long in tooth. I am curious on the Athlon 1700, are you under clocking? If so, and you are playing lossless formats with some degree of...- Lynn

Dedicated Computer Specs - HIGH END
I tend to agree about underclocking, but with modern CPUs do you need to do it? My experience you can just run a typical load, and in the case of playing music it is a low load, and just turn down the fan. For instance I am running a 2.4 ghz P4 that is constantly on, and when I am playing...- Lynn

Dedicated Computer Specs - HIGH END
Why Itunes vs other lossless formats? Generally speaking, aluminum cases are more noisy than steel, and contrary to what people have heard they do not conduct heat as well as steel. Aluminum resonates vibrations too easily. I have a case from Lian Li, although it was not advertised as a quiet...- Lynn

Now I KNOW a source is important---1212M is AMAZING
I like the emu-1212m too. I have owned a quite a few DACS, including several in the 4-6k range. It compares VERY well to those DACS, and for some attributes bests them! Enjoy!- Lynn

Why use foobar?
Hi Sigma and Publius, Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the album list component. If either of you have time to download and install MediaMonkey, I would like your comments on how it supports navigating thru a music collection and any other suggestions on customizing FOOBAR to be...- Lynn

Why use foobar?
Ok, I know what I about to say may be heresy, but I think FOOBAR has a fatal flaw. If you have a large collection of music, unless I have missed something, FOOBAR does not provide an easy way to organize and select music to play. Yes, I have tried the 'columns' plugin, but was unable to get...- Lynn

Hi, I have a Benchmark too, and I think it is very nice. What sound card are you using as a source? Lynn- Lynn

Please, just stop crackling....
One more thought. Is it possible that your defective keyboard is the issue? It is well known that problems with keyboard polling can cause similar affects to an IRQ problem. Trying another keyboard may be the ticket.- Lynn

Please, just stop crackling....
I suspect that it not an IRQ problem if your motherboard is fairly new (last couple of years). Modern motherboards using Windows have resolved the IRQ conflict issues by virtualizing the hardware. You should be able to change the PIO to something like "DMA IF AVAILABLE". Perhaps a firewire...- Lynn

Another thing to check is the DMA setting for your harddrive. Check in control panel system settings under your primary and secondary drive controllers. Sometimes, when there are i/o errors, (for instance on a CDROM drive attached to the same channel as your harddrive), and Windows will turn off...- Lynn

What Soundcard
Thanks for the info on the 404 (I have the 1212 so I was not sure). By the way, I totally agree about sample rate. I have tried upsampling using both software and hardware, and for CDs 44.1 always sounds the most natural to me. The upsampled sound sometimes seems clearer with what appears...- Lynn

What Soundcard
Hi, It would be interesting to hear from someone who has actually tried both the EMU-404 and Audiophile 192. I think the EMU-404 also does 192 (I know the EMU-1212 does). So, both cards do support the same sample rate. The big difference is in the DACs and perhaps associated components...- Lynn

Sound Card With Lowest Jitter?
Has anyone researched to find the sound card that has the highest quality SPDIF? Is it better to use a USB SPDIF source vs. a PCI card? What do you recommend? Thanks.- Lynn

Initial Impressions on the E-mu 1212m
Radar, you could be on to something with the "warm" theory. As you probably know, many CDs, particularly from the 80's, were overengineered to wow people. The highs were often overly emphasized. I will have to check, but I think it is often very brassy older CDs that seem to benefit from...- Lynn

Initial Impressions on the E-mu 1212m
"How is saying his bad ears will save him money harsh? There's no moral or emotional component attached to such a statement, other than the one's some of you misappropriated. He's fortunate, if anything." First who is to say that what he is hearing is not more accurate than what you are...- Lynn

Initial Impressions on the E-mu 1212m
Obviously, many of you are biased against compression and undoubtly think that a purist approach is always best. I sometimes feel this way. However, I too have noticed on some songs compression actually sounds better. I have a very revealing hifi setup so differences in sound are easy to...- Lynn

Is it worth it to upgrade my sound card?
I have not purchased computer speakers for a while, but I ran across this: http://www.vonschweikert.com/fps_speaker.html Although I have not heard these, this company has a great reputation and offers a free trial. I currently use a pair of their larger floorstanders and they are the best...- Lynn

Is it worth it to upgrade my sound card?
I also feel a soundcard upgrade is an absolute must. I also think the E-MU cards (404, 1212m) give you a lot for the money. Stay away from consumer gaming cards (Sound Blaster, etc). Given the relatively modest price difference, buying an E-Mu card is a no brainer.- Lynn

ASIO-->USB-->Sound Blaster Nx-->BenchDAC1?
Would the Sound Blaster NX be a good USB source for a SPDIF signal at 44 to the Benchmark 1? If I use the SB NX, would volume be controled on the PC or the DAC? Does the NX support ASIO? Does the NX re-sample? What other USB-->SPDIF sources should be considered in lieu of modding the...- Lynn

DAC recommendations
There are a lot of options in the used market on Audiogon.com. For instance, there is a MSB Link DAC III with the optional power for $250, or a MSB Link II for $165. There are also several Audio Alchemy and EAD dac at that price point too. Or, if space is a concern, you can get state of the...- Lynn

DAC1 Questions???
"How do dac 1 and 0404 compare, generally?" I like both for different reasons, and which I could have the best of two. The 1212m has the perception of more bass, but the bass is less defined. There seems to be less of an emphasis on the high frequencies. The combination of the these two...- Lynn

1212m to Amp volume questions
Looking I your settings, I notice that the monitor volume in the lower right is at -132. Could that setting affect the line level? I am not sure how you have your patch panel setup, but if you are 'monitoring' the signal this may be why you have to push the output volume so high. My setting...- Lynn
