NEW Schiit Lyr 2: Impressions
Well OK so now I'm listening with the LCD2's to Kraftwerk and some Man Parrish vintage electronica and it's just psychedelic! Little blips & blaps flying all over the room left & right & up & down and such! I have to say that the more I upgrade my sources the more I love the LCD2's more. The...- sferic

NEW Schiit Lyr 2: Impressions
Lyr 2 came today, I am listening to it. The SN on my Lyr 1 is 196, so I've had it quite awhile. My "fancy" phones are LCD2 rev2 and Grado PS1000. I recently picked up the Beyer T1's which got me going thru all the ole headsets. The Grado's have never loved the Lyr but sounded really good...- sferic

Flagship headphones in the killing field
I've been putting statistics on PPT's to support my bosses' opinions for a living in the marketing departments of a couple well-known tech companies for the past 7 years. It's fun and it pays pretty good. This guy's deck on headphones is decent, but amateurishly manipulative and lacks visual...- sferic

PS1000 Impressions Thread
Oh, just came across this. Yes, I've had to redo it a few times, but yes, wrap tape around the top part of the metal spikes. I may do the same on my LCD-2's, they slip down too. Us Neanderthals tend to have our ears closer to the top of our heads. It's great that phones are adjustable, but...- sferic

LCD-2 Birthday Cake
Sankar & Audeze in general are classy & great to do business with! I'd wondered if you'd sent them the pic, of course they'd find it because they actively seek feedback on the forums. Great company. In my neck of the woods (SF) if your GF had disclosed a particular company's unreleased...- sferic

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
IMHO there is a significant difference between iTunes and specialty software. There are plenty of free or low cost alternatives you can try out for yourself. Audirvana free comes to mind. Graphs, measurements, and whitepapers will never replace your ears. iTunes is doing 1000 things at...- sferic

PS1000 Impressions Thread
WOW! Whoever invented the "electrical tape on the cup mounting pins" mod deserves Sainthood! I have, I guess, a relatively small head, and had gotten used to having to cinch them back up every now and then. Thanks to the magic of this mod I have no comfort issues whatsoever anymore. These cans...- sferic

PS1000 Impressions Thread
At work, cubicle environment, I have Denon D5000's, my favorite closed phones. At home I listen to my LCD-2's a lot as well. They do have a unique and interesting sound quality, and the large drivers & thick pads cut out outside noise much more than the PS1000's foam cups and wide open backs...- sferic

OVER-PERFORMING, OVER-ACHIEVING Headphones/IEMs for their price range. Top cost effective cans/IEMS
Easy, for open, Grado SR80 ($100) For closed, Ultrasone HiFi 580 ($120). Sennheiser, Denon, all the other brands you read about on here make great phones, but for the low price range, I think these 2 companies really excel. That said, every ear is different.- sferic

The best music player software for Mac ?
Quote: LOL that is the absolute best and most concise summarization of the mental illness of compulsive audiophilia I have ever seen. Just replace the work "player" with headphone, amp, speaker, cable, whatever and you have a statement that is undoubtedly true! We're all nuts, but it's a...- sferic

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
"I wished one could merge these two players. I actually prefer Fidelias itunes integration as you don't need intunes open. But i very much prefer Audirvanas playlist opposed to Fidelias library." I agree - I actually ended up using the iPhone app instead of the playlist because it has all...- sferic

Schiit Lyr - The tube rolling thread
Quote: I only have 4 sets - the original JJ's, kind of thin. Gold Lions, nice upgrade but I'd describe them as you describe the Matsu 6922's. Most disappointing, some cryo 6H23N's - flabby bass and no air. And the Matsu's (National), which I had settled on. Just ran thru all 3 again tonight...- sferic

Agreed. Deoxit works wonders. Sound becomes quieter and more detailed. It's highly addictive however. I can barely even plug in a phone cord without whipping out the pen.- sferic

PS1000 Impressions Thread
Yep, the fit is not the best. They aren't the prettiest girl in town. But like any great relationship the PS1000's will always surprise and delight you when you change other equipment. If they don't like it, they will nag you to death until you fix it. If they do, it's pure sex.- sferic

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
Audirvana Plus is amazing. Great software. Never tried Amarra & Pure because back when I was looking the pricing was outrageous. I think they have versions that are more reasonable. Fidelia copies Audirvana's "virtual" component interface, and in the default setting it's HUGE. Change it...- sferic

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes
Thanks to this thread I've gone whole hog into Fidelia. You can try out the whole thing free for 15 days, but wallets beware... First off, ANYTHING is better than iTunes. Have been using Audirvana, and then Aurdirvana Plus for ages. GREAT upgrade, and a great deal. However, the iTunes...- sferic

I bet you're not into porn either.... ;-) Personally, I enjoy unboxing vids when I'm anticipating the arrival of a highly prized thing. Easy to make fun of, sure, and not for everyone. But I bet you've got a few things you're into that would make most people go whaaaaaa????!!????- sferic

Do most people who invest in high end head-fi listen to just CD's or vinyl?
My advice, always buy the best headphones or speakers you can. Transducer tech is extremely stable, while pretty much everything else is always in flux. If you have great cans/speakers, they'll let you know what about the rest of your signal chain needs upgrading or not. If you get below...- sferic

Schiit Lyr - The tube rolling thread
Quote: Oh I know, no insult taken. They are all budget options. Between the three they work best for me. The LCDs can be muddy with bad tubes, and PS1000's can be shrill in a heartbeat. I just think the Nationals are decent choice in the budget upgrade department. I'd expect the...- sferic

Schiit Lyr - The tube rolling thread
Tubes have to please LCD-2 + PS1000's. I'm loving these National Electronics (Mullard Tooling) NOS6922's and done looking. Before that the Gold Lions were my favorite but a bit harsh on the Grados. Tried the Russian Cryosets, but a bit muddy.- sferic

OFFICIAL 2012 Bay Area Meet Thread (California) February 11th, Saturday
Wow it's local. The Hotel also has a free shuttle to BART, one of our rapid transit systems. Taking a cab between Burlingame & SF will run about $35-$40 bucks, so if you're planning to spend a lot of time in SF outside the meet up you might want to find a hotel near BART in town.- sferic

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.
Quote: Agreed. Another poster here said "there's nothing controversial about near universal acclaim" with regard to 50 Words. (Not so sure the acclaim is "near universal", I mean, we're talking KATE BUSH, but I'll grant him that for the sake of argument.) And then seemed to imply only...- sferic
