You're in the UK. I'd really suggest getting a pair of ACS T2. The sound quality, comfort, fit, etc. are unrivaled. Check them out if you want a pro IEM.

If you can find one, try iRiver's iHP 1xx series. It does have an optical out and IMO sounds by far the best compared to any DAP I've heard before (once it runs Rockbox and lossless files). You can also wait for catscratch'es review of the new Kenwood player, although there is no digital out there.

In such a case custom IEM's should rather be out of the question. Your ear canal will definitely change and you might try those E500 (but I'd rather wait for some constructive reviews of them if I were you). And to answer your question, UE-10 Pro's are not the best custom IEM's currently...

I use my high-end IEM's as my one-and-only primary source; home listening and portable use alike. I will never have enough of them.

I don't exactly know what the problem may be, but I've read somewhere that FLAC's should be tagged only once. When it's both ID3v1 and ID3v2, then apparently Rockbox tries to read both simultaneously and locks up. Reset should do it here. Maybe you should change the tags in your FLAC files then...
