Should I retire my HRT Music Streamer
I have the II+ It was a very satisfying purchase -- 13 years ago. It's used with powered speakers. My files max out at 24/96, 2 ch. Am I going to get a meaningful upgrade from replacing it with a more contemporary DAC of similar price ($200-$500)? Thx- zowie

SL-1200 -- flimsy controls?
I just set up a new 1200GR. (Fantastic price on B&H now FYI - $350 off plus 10% store cash back). The cuing feels crude, but that's been discussed a lot on line. I'm posting b/c the start/stop button fees flimsy to me. It has some play, it lacks positive action that you get on the Hanpin...- zowie

Audio Technica LP-1240 - Anyone been under the hood? (+ mini review)
This is one of the so-called "Super-OEM" turntables. It is priced lower than most. I got one as a second deck to play 45s & 78s because I've grown tired of futzing around with unreliable 40+ year old Duals and changers for this. I'm happy with the purchase because for this use it works...- zowie

What do y'all do with your CD Inserts ???
What do you do with your CD inserts after you've ripped your discs to a server or other computer playback device? I'm thinking about keeping the booklets in my listening room, especially the fancy box set booklets, while boxing up (most of) the CDs in jewel cases with their back cards and...- zowie

DVD-A vs. DVD-V for Music
For 2-channel 24/96 audio, is there any advantage to going through the trouble of burning DVD-A discs rather than using audio only in the ubiquitous DVD video format?- zowie

Blech - Media destroyed by its own "protective" packaging
I recently discovered two recordings were destroyed by their factory packaging. One was an LP on EMI from the early 70s (Menuhin). The inner sleeve was paper with interior plastic lining, as is found on many European classical lps. It stuck to the record and when I pealed it off it left...- zowie

The Devaluation of Classical Music
Browing amazon the past week, I was amazed by some of the classical boxed sets that have come out the past two or three years. Large sets of first rate performances on major domestic and import labels with prices between about .50 and $3 per disc, at least if you shop around a little. ... -
OJC/Fantasy/Telarc/Concord Closeout!
oldies.com has a huge selection of Fantasy/OJC and Telarc titles on closeout for $4.98. There's a banner to click on the home page. I suspect they may have saw marks, but still, awesome catalogues and many of the discs cost more used. There are some K2 remasters and SACDs mixed in. I just... -

Broken Record - DAMN DAMN DAMN (and eek)
One of my long time favorite records, Richard Tauber singing Vienna, City of Dreams on a Parlophone 78, is cracked! I can't remember when I last played it. So it could be it's one more of several shellac records that were damaged by movers dropping a box of them my last move. But what I...- zowie

Odetta - RIP
This is a shock. Maybe it's because I'm pretty sleep deprived right now, but I can't remember feeling so sad about the death of a performer I didn't know personally. Heifetz and Sinatra were also disturbing, but they were retired and it was sort of more in the cards. American folk music... -
Is 720p good enough?
. . . for an LCD TV in the 37-40 inch range? I have a new DVD player that upconverts to 1080p, but no plans for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I only get broadcast tv and don't watch that much. On a medium screen, will I really notice much of a difference to justify spending a couple hundred dollars more...- zowie

2008 reissue of The Stranger
Has anyone heard this in any of its three new versions that came out a few weeks ago? Half the amazon reviews that commented on sound quality said it sounds great and half said its atrociously compressed and the worse edition yet. -
Rack or stand for Turntable AND Video?
As I mentioned in another thread, I'm thinking about throwing a medium sized flat screen into my 2-channel audio system. Haven't bought one yet, so there's some flexibility there. Unfortunate room. 17 x 9. One of the long walls has my LPs along it so functionally its even narrower. Doors in...- zowie

Great redbook with pictures
I think I'm going to add a TV to my 2-channel music system. My CDP is now 10+ years old so I'd be willing to replace it with a DVD player if I could get redbook playback that's on-par with CD-only players. I'm not likely to delve into hi-res digital audio formats (I have a huge vinyl...- zowie

I have never had a drop of water in my basement in the five years I've had this house and got three inches worth in like an hour. What's wrong with my speaker positioning/room? I hear sound coming from each of the speakers with some front to rear depth. Mono sounds come from dead center, deep back. But there's no left-right spread, just left, center, and right.- zowie

Should I Paint My Car?
97 Mustang. 105k. Runs perfect but looks like crap - clear coat flaking off and lots of scratches thanks to the moronic parking attendants at the lot at work. Seems like it'd be a waste of money. But I'm gonna keep it for a while and hate being seen in a crappy looking car. New paint or not?- zowie

Guitar for my kid
My son who is 8 has been asking for a guitar now and then for a while. I'd like nothing more than for him to learn any instrument of his choice (I play a few and it was a very important part of my life when I was younger), but I put it off because I highly doubt he'll keep up with it for more...- zowie
