Can anyone tell me why it defaults to 96hz after a restart? On OSX mavericks

Everytime I restart my bitrate defaults back to 44hz and am just wondering if anyone can tell me how to keep it set. I'm on 10.8.4 and it's a dragonfly dac for reference.   Also just to be clear, but common consensus is still on the recommendation that it be set at 48hz, correct?

I've downloaded this but am not sure I have it configured right. Turning it on and off from the dock icon doesn't seem to change anything. I'm running a mac mini on mountain lion USB'd to a nuforce udac2. Can anyone just tell me what I should have checked?

money isn't an object, it's simplicity. i don't want a usb anything plugged in when i'm tightly squeezed in the corner of an airplane. distortion also isn't a concern as this is strictly for tv/movies. wouldn't be that noticeable.
