If it's a simple digital gain control, yes, pretty much.

Raising the entire spectrum is simply adding more gain. The ear is thus 'tricked' that the louder setting sounds better.

Easy: run a sine sweep. If at some point the sound suddenly jumps on one side there's something wrong with the corresponding driver from the opposite channel.

        You can do the same with silicone tips. I had the best results with the included ones and with the Sony hybrids. But I still prefer the sound of the foamies, better isolation, fuller sound.
