Audio-gd 3.1 or Schiit Bifrost w/ SB Touch?

Hi: I rarely post here but longtime lurker.  I have been doing PC audio for six or seven years and currently have two systems w/ SB Touch as the digital source.  Both Touch have the Bolder Cables analog mods done (which removes the electrolytic caps from the analog outs among other mods). ...

    SlimDevices/Logitech SqueezeBox Owners

A couple of points: As long as you have a home ethernet or 802.11 (wifi) network up and running, the Slim Devices/Logitech devices can be addressed by the Squeeze Box Server (the player) and as has been pointed out, it doesn't necessarily need to be loaded onto a PC. The music files can be...

    SlimDevices/Logitech SqueezeBox Owners

The Touch required a 5 volt power supply during beta testing. Doubtful this will change Why would anyone want to put both the mechanical and electronic noise of a HDD near the playback system. One of the advantages of SqueezeBox technology is to put music storage elsewhere.

    Technics SL1200 Cartridge Alignment

I don't know where to start. The fact is that the price of all the parts necessary to replace the Technics 12xx tonearm is around $265 not $65 . If you factor into that figure the economies of scale in producing millions of those world wide as opposed to OL's maybe thousands of units all told...

    Technics SL1200 Cartridge Alignment

The idea that spending more actually buys you more is quite foolish. The Technics tooling was paid for long ago and one can now reap the rewards of that but if one prefers spending multiples on perceived value be my guest. The cost of the damping tray and the tonearm rewire is less than $350 not...

    Technics SL1200 Cartridge Alignment

The Technics arm w/ the KAB damping tray and the tonearm rewire is better than any of the alternatives you are looking at. With the OL based on the Rega you will no longer be able to adjust VTA with the turn of a dial and the damping tray won't fit. Its a bass ackwards step to say nothing of...

    How to get warmer..

I'm a 2 channel guy and not a regular here but the Denon SS amp is probably the culprit. I don't know your speakers and their efficiency but an integrated tube amp should provide the warmer environment you seek. In these days of economic stress lots of gear is available used at ridiculous prices.

    Switch box ...

Decware sells a 6 way switch that I've used for years and I find it completely transparent. Listed as the RSB6 and sells for $119, can't provide a link ,sorry. No affiliation, BTW. 6 RCA pairs in, one pair out. Larry

Trying to get things straight... Squeezebox VS DACs

Optical requires a conversion at both ends by less than optimal hardware. It does offer relief from interference generated by electrical devices. Using a packet switched network to transmit the data removes almost all the noisy PC and hard drive issues. Initially, I felt that USB devices...

Trying to get things straight... Squeezebox VS DACs

The SB uses (wireless) ethernet to send the data (music) from the Slimserver on your PC to the SB. Ethernet has built in error checking. What arrives is what was sent. The noise from the PC including EMI and RFI is left behind. Any PC issues from interrupts or the like do not affect the SB. The...

Laptop > ? > DAC = which would you go for?

The Audigy 2 NX is a bit tricky to set up properly. I had the help of some people in Hong Kong who are very high on this device. They can be found here-http://www.odysseyaudiohk.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=digital_gen;action=display;num=11185 06128 When properly set up, the Audigy is of...

Laptop > ? > DAC = which would you go for?

Computer noise is not an issue w/ either system, which is most often the reason that the SB is considered the better option. I've never heard a SB w/ analog mods, but I much prefer the sound of NOS DACs which is why I have the Scott Nixon DACs. I did try an SB3 in the living room system and went...

Laptop > ? > DAC = which would you go for?

I also have a laptop serving as my music server. I have a storage drive attached via a PCMCIA card for USB 2.0, because the laptop is an older PIII that only has USB 1.1 ports. My first device was the Transit using it w/ Foobar to a cheap pro audio DAC. The Transit has very stable drivers and...

    Laptop USB to SPDIF Recommendations

Already have M-Audio Transit to external DAC (24/96) and using Foobar to resample but getting lots of pops & crackles. The Creative Audigy 2 NX is no longer available. Can anyone suggest another currently available device that that accesses WINXP laptop through USB 2.0, has stable drivers, uses...

Up and running but advice sought

Hi: I browse this site quite a bit particularly this source forum and I was hoping to get a little help or guidance. I’ve always found this to be a generous place. I finally put together an admittedly low tech (read inexpensive) PC audio system based on the M-Audio Transit. Because I work in...

    More turntable questions (long post)

This is Todd's forum and as such I'm sure he gets the last word. At any rate, to the guy with the DD Micro-Seiki-from what I can find about it - if you are going to throw it out and buy a new belt drive TT please send the old one to me. The set up of a TT and tonearm is an art and with a...

thinking (litely) about getting into vinyl, need help

I've never thought of the Technics as a strictly pop/rock TT. I think that it does jazz awfully well as that is the biggest part of my listening. The only valid criticism I can offer of the Technics is the tonearm wiring could be improved. Whether this is the cause of of compression on large...

thinking (litely) about getting into vinyl, need help

Mr. Radar: Sorry that I took so long but I forgot about posting on this thread . While I'm not really a headphone guy I really like this site. There is an honest interest in sharing information about high quality, yet affordably priced equipment. My KAB modded Technics 1200 MK II was actually...

thinking (litely) about getting into vinyl, need help

The Technics 1200 can be a very good TT. I have a Mark II with the full boat mods from http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/index.htm I also have a Rega Planar 3 w/ an SME tonearm in my bedroom system. You need to spend thousands to exceed the performance of a KAB modded 1200. Check out the KAB...

PC hardware rec for use as an audio server

The wireless squeezebox @ $300 adds enormous convenience. The most economic method of ripping and storing the wav files, offering reasonable redundance is still the issue. for me. The squeezebox doesn't seem to need much in the way of computer resources, I'm not sure what EAC requires in...

PC hardware rec for use as an audio server

I need some help from the members of this forum. I am looking for a recommendation for a very low cost PC platform to serve as place to store music, probably in wav format and send it to a bit perfect card like the Chaintech AV710. A decent CD ROM for ripping is also a requirement. I work in...

    Can you compare a PC to a $1500+ cd-player ?

Ian: Earlier in this thread I asked the question whether at this price point ($1500)the digital to analog conversion is best handled by a soundcard or off the PC by a separate DAC and you favor a separate DAC because of the relatively poor power supply inherent with a PC sound card. I don't...

    Can you compare a PC to a $1500+ cd-player ?

Reading a digital signal from a hard drive is inherently quite a bit superior to reading from an optical disk. The following link explains this better than I can. http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/eac/eac.html The question to me is whether to do the digital to analog conversion through...

    Can you compare a PC to a $1500+ cd-player ?

I am fairly new to this site but not at all new to the concept of what it costs to do home audio. The Benchmark DAC-1 retails for just under $1000. A suitable PC has a cost as well. Bargain basement and being computer savvy could get that down but reasonably not much below the $500 range...

recommendation for 2 channel sound card

Hi: Recently my Denon 2200 has decided it doesn't always like to play CD's. It still functions as a DVD player and as an SACD player and may even play DVDA (if I owned any.) My first thought was to get a dedicated CD player but then I started reading about playing back ripped CD's from a...
