yeah I would get a DAC.  The Dac really does make a large difference and is very obvious even to people without audiophile ears.

I think the only way to solve this is tell people about good headphones. Their needs to be more entry level priced stuff so it is accessible to the general public. I really do think this is our responsibility when people tell us they are going to buy some bose or beats phones try and steer them...
