Hifiman HE400 vs Sennheiser HD650 soundstage
I've been messing about with IEM's for around eight months now, and I want to give full size cans a try. I just got a pair of HE400's. I've read a lot about their sound signature and based on that, I think I want to give the 650's a shot. Coming from IEM's though, I really want to take...- ethanw

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but if anyone in the U.S. has the 5.0 and wants to hear the 4.ai, shoot me a PM. I'd love to hear the 5.0. Maybe we can work out some sort of situation just to audition them. No obligation for a permanent trade.- ethanw

Going from IEM's to full size, or portable cans
I apologize for posting this in two different forums, but I figured I may get additional expertise in the IEM forum on the IEm side of things here. OK, so I think I want to give some full size or portable cans a try. But here's the thing. My main source will be an iPod Classic 7th gen. I...- ethanw

First full size cans for someone coming from IEM's: Heir 4.ai, UE900, SM64 $300
OK, so I think I want to give some full size cans a try. But here's the thing. My main source will be an iPod Classic 7th gen. I do have a Fiio E11, but nothing better for an amp. I like a large spacious soundstage, and on the warm/bassy side of neutral. Not too much extra bass, but...- ethanw

Hard to explain, SM3 shell making strange sound when tapped . . .
OK, so I have this O.C.D. thing where I tap on the shells of IEMS right after I put them in. Well, I lightly tap, then snap my fingers outside my ears so I know I have a good seal. Not too crazy, right? Anyway. I currently have in my possession a pair of SM3 v2's. When I put them in and tap...- ethanw

Fiio E11 vs E17 vs something else for bass control
I'm stuck with an iPod classic for now. I have a pair of Heir 4.Ai, and I want a bit more bass. Since EQ on the iPod is not an option, what should I go for? I have the E11, but it's noise floor seems a bit high with the Heirs. I feel like it was lower with the w4R, but about the same with...- ethanw

Ultimate Ears UE 900 Discussion and Impressions Thread
Quote: I got the V-shape thing from a review a think. With that in my head, I did feel that the mids were less up front than on the 4.Ai. I'd be fine with the UE900 as long as the bass was as it is now, or a tad more. I'd probably prefer boosting the bass a bit on the UE's than...- ethanw

Ultimate Ears UE 900 Discussion and Impressions Thread
I'm hearing a lot about this tiny bass hole bore. I still have a few days to return mine, so what's the best way to temporarily block the hole to see how they sound? If it's tape, what kind? I'm not so sure I want to lose even 1db of bass. The reason I got UE900 was I thought they would beat...- ethanw

Heir Audio 3.ai vs phonak 232 vs IE80--specific questions
Tinyman, hate to keep asking you questions, but it is very helpful that you have experience with all of these. Which Which is more v shaped, 3.ai or phonak?. Which has a wider sound stage 3.ai or phonak? Last question (promise). Could you describe the bass of the two? Thanks for all the help- ethanw

Heir Audio 3.ai vs phonak 232 vs IE80--specific questions
Quote: Since the PFE232 has too much treble for me, should I eliminate the 3.ai? How would you compare the soundstage and treble on the two? I guess I'm asking you for a brief comparison . . . I see you are also familiar with the UE900. I have the box sitting unopened...- ethanw

Heir Audio 3.ai vs phonak 232 vs IE80--specific questions
If I had to pick between a W4 with more bass and a 232 with less of a v shape, I might lean towards the latter. I think I can deal with a SLIGHT V . . . maybe. The 232's V just seems like too much, and too bright. I think I prefer the imaging, layering, and soundstage on the 232's. It's...- ethanw

Heir Audio 3.ai vs phonak 232 vs IE80--specific questions
I know there are tons of comparisons of these, but I have a couple specific questions. I'm new to IEMs and I have just recently purchased: Westone W4r, Heir 4.ai, phonak 232, sennheiser IE80, UE 900 and Hifiman 262. I know, big initial outlay, but I got a couple from places that will take...- ethanw

VA / MD / DC meet on Saturday, December 15, 2012
I may be interested in coming. However, I am new to Headfi, have nothing to share, and I'm primarlilly interested in IEM's so that I might finally buy some. Maybe I'd have something to share next time. Is that cool? Any good IEM's that might show up would be much appreciated: GR07 (I see...- ethanw

How to demo IEM's
Quote: Yeah, I think the classifieds route is a good idea. You're right, most of the IEM's I want to try pop up on the classifieds pretty often. MY problem is, I think I want to go for the Heir Audio 3.Ai. Won't be seeing those in the classifieds just yet, but as you said, I could...- ethanw

How to demo IEM's

How to demo IEM's
When I got my speakers a couple years ago, I read a LOT of reviews on forums, online magazines, etc. I also demoed five pairs in my home, and countless others in various stores. I drove an hour away sometimes to hear a particular speaker. With IEM's it doesn't seem to be that easy. I used a...- ethanw
