Just to add, it doesn't necessarily have to be a single unit. I have no problem buying a separate dac and amp, so long as it allows me to easily switch between my speakers and headphones.

They do in fact sound great running straight out of an iPod, but I personally prefer to use an amp aswell. I have the FiiO E5 which does a great job, but I'd recommend getting the E7 if you're planning on getting one since it's newer and probably a better. Never heard it myself though.
