These are my go-to cans for part of the audio work I do.

I just found this review. I've had these for a few years now and for some reason I just decided to do a search for what others think of these cans.   I do post production audio work and part of the work I do involves checking fades and also checking audio material for clicks/pops and these...

How can I calculate resistance, in dB's, for headphone mods?

I am looking to give my kid one of my more sturdier headphones for him to use (we've bought a couple of pairs of those "kids headphones" that aren't as loud as other headphones but they break easy).   What I'm looking for (to further educate myself on using resistors) is a way to figure out...

What would be the most transparent DIY headphone amp to build?

If you had a mastering-grade DAC (clean, transparent) and wanted to build an absolutely transparent headphone amp that can drive headphones up to 800 ohms, what would you build?

First impressions and pics of my DT 770 mod

Here's a couple of pictures of my modified DT 770 Pro 80: Redsecta Mod DT 770 Pro 80 pictures by redsecta72_bucket - Photobucket I added sound absorption material on the earcups (pieces of acoustic underlayment) and replaced the stock cable with a detachable mini XLR, as well as the wires...

Cmoys on eBay - why so cheap?

I've noticed different versions of the Cmoy amp on eBay, they are usually listed for around $40. I've read that the parts for building one of these things was around $30, so why do they sell so cheap on eBay? I'm talking about the ones that are on mint tins too, not some mass-produced amps that...

What's the name of the tool that tells u what size drillbit 2 use?

Somewhere, I've seen a type of ruler that has common diameters of holes used for jacks and that sort of thing, which tells you what size of bit to use. Can someone please put me on? Thanks!

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (80/250 Ohm) Mods - List

I searched for mods for the DT 770s but only found a couple of threads that mention blunt wrappers and a couple of other things, so I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to modifications for these particular cans. I'm in the process of re-cabling mine and have completely taken...

How do you solder female stereo jacks?

I received my parts to build a switchbox that's going to switch between 3 headphones and am a little unclear on a couple of things: 1) The female TRS jacks I purchased (Neutrik NMJ6HC-S) have 6 solder pins; do I need to use all 6? I have a good idea of how the L/R wires go to the switch, but...

Anyone use 18awg for headphone recabling?

I just scored 50 feet of teflon-coated 18awg SPC for cheep. I plan on making some cables for other components in my system, this is why I originally bought it for, but now looking at it in person, it doesn't seem too large of a gauge for doing headphone recabling, so I'm wondering if anyone out...

Heavier gauge wire: increase power to iron, or just wait?

Rookie soldering question: I've got one of those cheap Weller soldering stations (the red one, can't remember the model right now). Well, it's got a temperature knob and I usually have it set at a little past "3" and on wires that are 20 - 24 awg, it's usually a couple of seconds and the solder...

When rolling your own bal. cables, can u skimp on the shield?

As in skimp on the quality of the shield cable, for example, I got a small roll of teflon-coated SPC but have a ton of cheap generic XLR cables around, so I was thinking of using one of the cheaper cables as my shield; what do you guys think about this?

"Seashell" effect with the DT770 Pro 80s?

Just got some used DT 770 Pro's (80Ohm) from Beyerdynamic USA (on eBay). It looks like they recabled and put new ear pads on these, but as soon as I put them on my head, without anything playing, I immediately noticed a "seashell" effect, air has a "phasey" sound coming into the headphones...

How hard would it be to make this type of switchbox?

Hosa 1/4" Audio Signal Selector Switch SLW-333 SLW-333 Can anyone please give me a rough estimate as to how complicated it would be to make something similar to that switchbox (Hosa SLW-333). It's about $100 and pretty much what I need as a source switcher for 3 headphones, but if I could...

Solid versus Stranded Silver Plated Copper Wire?

I did a search and didn't find anything on this. What are the advantages/disadvantages for using solid wire versus stranded? Is one type better for certain things over others?

Any ideas on how to open up the earcups on my 240DFs?

Looks like I have to pry it open to get to the connections, darn. Anyone have any tips? I've got a set of "jewelry" flathead screwdrivers, very fine, but don't want to damage my cans. Not sure if I should use two screwdrivers to separate the seal, or one to try to push downward on.

Anyone use mic cables for can mods?

I don't think I saw any posts in the DIY forum, I did find loads of people braiding their own cables, but what about using a good quality single pair mic cable? I was making some audio cables last night and realized that the cores are probably 22ga. ?

    Lifespan of Headphones?

Hi, I searched but didn't find anything on this and am curious to know - Do headphones die eventually after years use? Do the drivers start to deteriorate (due to materials and I would assume environments might also have an effect like everything else). I understand how you can damage a pair...

    Passive headphone switcher?

Hi, I've been lurking around for a while and have searched and found nothing on what I'm looking for, so I think I may have to build it (?) I work with audio and use two (sometimes three) pairs of headphones to help me focus in on various frequencies. I'd like to not keep plugging/unplugging...
