The convenience is the problem.  If I order now then I can get the line-out for the iPhone, the amp itself *and* the balanced cables for the UE10s all at once... no hassle... plus i've never heard a balanced amp before :( :( :(

foobar definitely has a downmixer from stereo to mono. Get a (relatively) decent outboard DAC - like say an Edirol UA25 or Trends UD-10 and you'd probably be good to go in choosing any cans he likes! If you need the extra fi then an amp after the DAC may also be in order..

Sony forced my hand to use the eq on the MZ-R10 - the darn mp3 implementation is rolled off on the highs! No such problems with ATRAC though

Well, i didn't mean to imply that *all* digital sources sounded the same, that was a freudian slip somewhat. i think that good implementations ought not to be so hard nowadays! Using CDs as source material is different as you may have different methods to buffer etc to reduce jitter etc etc...

I know you didn't list any IEMs in there but if you're just looking for pure detail there's *very* little that has more detail than the Etymotic ER4S or the UE10s for that matter..
