It's sad how side-tracked this thread became with the arguments - let's try to avoid them if we're going to keep this thread unlocked until launch.

Speaking of launch - wondering when we're going to get an official, confident date; I know that "it will be ready when it's ready", but I'm curious to know when that is. I'm the type of person that likes to know things in advance, as small as that may be sometimes.

Val - any hints? I'm assuming pre-orders for the "Pre-Release" units will begin within a week or so?

Don't you guys think that he'll let us know as soon as he knows something??? Geez.

I can just see him now "Well I wasn't going to say anything, but since YOU asked I guess I'll divulge the release date"

Please, don't start another argument. It's rather obvious that all we can do it wait now anyway. No need to get so upset over me prodding him for a hint regarding it.

I'm not upset.  IMO this thread is just as 'littered' with people asking him 'when' as it is with arguments.  We're obviously hopelessly lost now with so many pages but my guess is if we got rid of all the 'when' questions we'd cut this in thirds.  This thread probably only has maybe 10 pages of real posts or information.  It makes it difficult for people to follow...

Hence why I - and I think one other person - recommended updating the first post with all we know, and then closing the thread until release - but it seems the general consensus is to keep it open.

Either way - all we can do now is wait until something happens on their end.

Agreed, an updated consolidated post would be very helpful

Well personally this thread was overall fun. I have enjoyed the speculation and added my own when I thought of something. Its interesting to see all the different flavors of how people express themselves, but despite mounting tension before the release break, my observation has been that everyone that has posted here has expressed a positive interest in this headphone. Yeah, everyone.

So while the tension and impatience are likely to continue (and make good sociology material) until it breaks with release, and there will still be some pockets of the antsy-pantsy that probably will continue quietly for those who wanted to be the first adopters but miss the initial supply, I think that in the long run people will still find and use this thread in the future. Very few will read far into this pre-release buzz, and what we say now will easily get buried by new head-fier's who will come here with questions. Reviews will probably be posted in articles as they are now, perhaps some of us will drop links to reviews in this thread. Nothing said today will survive long, unless (of course), the cake is a lie.

It is too bad the thread starter disappeared long ago. DJSquared, since you are on the first page, would you consider editing your first post by tacking on the pre-release index of interest?

Thanks again blackcoffeex1 for indexing the pre-release info. My suggestion of just searching for Val's posts gets the interested neophytes most of the way, but there are good tidbits on these pages that give good perspective on what the pre-release buzz and speculation was about.

I kinda wish my idea for how accessories could be clipped to the outside of the carry case would be on here, but I didn't add it to this index myself since its not going to be used anyway, and I'm not that vain. BUT I DID SUGGEST "VIPER" AS A NAME FOR THE COILED CABLE! Lol.

Edit: the formatting got a little messed up when quoting this post from my iPad, the original (and latest current index of relevant info, I believe) post was on page 176.

Updated Thread Pre-Release Summary:

The V-Moda M-100s...

...are closed circumaural cans meant keep in step with the M-80s more audiophile-pleasing sound signature.
...will most certainly be an upgrade SQ wise from the M-80s. Val Kolton from V-MODA has stated the highs are more extended than the M-80s while still avoiding a strong treble spike common in other headphones that could cause hearing damage with long listening sessions at high volume, and the bass range will be boosted to somewhere around +8 or 9 Db, sort of like a compromise between the M-80 and the LP2 models.
...have hinges, so they will be foldable.
...will be using 50mm drivers.
...have a secret additional feature that has not yet been revealed.
...do not require an amp, but will scale well if you decide to use one.
...do not have a definite price yet, but are expected to cost around $300.
...are current expected to be released somewhere around late July to early August.
...will be released in two colors--White/Silver and Shadow. A third color scheme may be included for the mass production release.
...will use the same custom shields as the LPs/LP2s. You can get the shields for 20% off using the limited-time promo code M-100MANIA.
...will come with a compact hard case, 3 cables, and a 3.5 mm to 1/4 in plug. The 3 cables are an audio only cable with a dual-share feature(what this means is not yet clear), and iphone compatible cable with controls and a mic, and an android compatible cable with a mic.
•The audio-only cable may have a color woven in to it.
•The smartphone mics are referred to as "super mics" that are improved from current offerings

...may have reversible cups in the listening position, for quick DJ-style monitoring.

Actually if anyone knows how to add add to BlackCoffeeX's excellent summary, I actually gave early impressions on the May '12 prototype on page 90.

BTW, I wanted to thank you earlier, but kept forgetting... Thanks for all of the info and pics, since Val has been to busy with working on getting the M-100 out the door to keep us in the loop with where things are with it.  I think you have added quite a bit to our expectations though, since the M-100 would appear to be a very nice headphone that would be an upgrade to anyone that has either the LP2 or the M-80 (based on how you have described it).  I know that I am one of many that looks forward to owning a pair in the near future. I just noticed we have a bunch of smiley's for other brands of headphones... I certainly hope the M-100 will be the one that gets V-Moda its own smiley around here.

PP PRODUCTION NOW and looks like end of July and ship early August!

EXCITING TIMES!!!
We'll setup PP units on site and give custom options, in the meantime everybody can select their custom graphics and colors.  We'll include the stock shields PLUS custom kit soo we can laser engrave and photograph your custom kit first.

Also, we'll have 5 total cable options... TBA soon!

AMEN.

RETAIL PLAN
OK - I've been meeting with a lot of retail stores on ideas for launch in stores, everybody wants M-100.  Retail stores make it more complicated. But these are great stores that love V-MODA so I feel we should choose one and our community can show we have purchasing strength to retail!

FACTORY UPDATE
These last few days we analyzed and tuned every machine on assembly line, we found one of the main machines is getting a little bit worn on this run.  Sound consistency is my BIGGEST FEAR... you see, the fit makes more of an actual difference once you are at a certain point, but if I mix/master songs I must now the sound of every unit is the same.  I take this more serious than any company as I want everybody to mix/master/product on M-80/M-100s. Therefore, I am going a few higher levels of sound checks.  Trust me, when the product is out - you can trust it for mixing/mastering and production.  I am frightened to produce on other "high end" brands, truly!

I am so thrilled now about our production consistency, it is like heaven to my ears with our processes we've put in place.  RESÈRVE STOCK.

THREAD THOUGHTS - FIRST SEMI-OPEN SOURCE HEADPHONE?
I think this thread should stay as is and maybe we edit the title to reflect "development/open-source". To me, it has been so special as I've gotten REAL feedback from the community for over a year on M-100 and everyone's input went into this project.  Many Head-Fiers got to try versions dating back from RMAF last year.  We are making new accessories based on feedback that aren't in the packaged units (like larger ear cushions). Let's let it ride for now and continue to give me feedback on some small details that can change final product in the next 40 days.

Those in LA or even Tokyo/HK can help us out at our offices w reviews. I'll also have a couple big DJs login in on this thread for their thoughts!

THE IDEAS OF COLORS OF PROD + ACCESSORIES HELPS ME SIGNIFICANTLY.  WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PHANTOM CHROME BTW?

SOUND OF SCIENCE > YOU SAW THIS PIC HERE FIRST

Jul 11, 2012 at 4:09 AM Post #3,060 of 23,366
I like the look of my phantom chromes, like I said much earlier I was pleasantly surprised how the mirror finish blended with my surroundings, but I like the shadow ones in your right hand more for the serious subtlety in comparison. IMO of course. Final secret feature = insta-hair styling? Or maybe we've all been experiencing the extra feature already: insomnia O_O

Edit: compositionally I like the second picture you edited in more, but now I wonder if I missed any secrets in your first pic. I like your sine-wave grapher thingie. And for some reason, I'm really hungry now.
MOAR O_____O
