The Go-Vibe 4 is the cheapest option. And it sounds pretty good too. I have HD-555's and the new Go-Vibe with AD8397 op-amp. You'll be happy with that combo.

Yeah, you're right. What I said apparently only applies to the IS setting. Lame uses the MS setting by default, so you can safely use that one aswell.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I'm pretty sure Stereo is the best option. Joint Stereo modes take advantage of duplicate sound data on the left and right channels and can thus get a slightly smaller filesize. I don't think Joint Stereo modes are used very often anymore, the marginally smaller...

Or you could buy an M-Audio Revolution 5.1. It has decent gaming support (although not as good as an Audigy or X-Fi), will do pretty good without an amp, and for music it should be between the 0404 and the Audigy2 or X-Fi.

I think you mean the Hercules Fortissimo IV, which would be a good choice if you're planning to get an amp later on. I think that it will drive the headphones you have now quite well though. If you're not getting an amp, some people have reported the Live 24-bit to drive headphones nicely.
