The Aeolus have a relaxed treble but I found the midrange very detailed and the bass amazing with the sub bass rumble. Perhaps it's the relaxed treble that you're not used to? I really like it personally. The Verite Open are everything people have been raving about. The best I can describe the sound is similar to the Focal Utopia with its frequency response and musicality, but without the treble sharpness that you sometimes get with the Utopia. Hopefully, I'll land a Verite Closed soon and can speak about them!Question for those that own or have heard both the Verite and the Aeolus. I'm super tempted on the Verite just because I adore the looks and craftsmanship, but I briefly owned the Aeolus and didn't like them at all due to the (to my ears) weird muffled tone in the midrange (stock & verite pads). Are the Verite anything like the Aeolus there? Since I can't audition them I'm just trying to figure out if it's even worth a shot or if I should just forget it since I can't really spend that much for looks alone and have them sit at a shelf as eye candy.
Did you write a reddit post all about this about a year ago - I think I remember offering some suggestions which would still stand now.
Try a higher impedance amp that doesn't over-damp the headphones and the suede universe pads. Same would hold true for Verite if you found it muffled in any way. (and yes please burn them in)
Also make sure to check out the pad chart on our website:https://www.zmfheadphones.com/zmfpads
The vast majority of users don't find our headphones subjectively "muffled," but there certainly are combinations that will sound that way to many users when used with certain pads and gear. It all comes down to whether the extra effort of finding the gear you like most WITH the pads that suit you best is worth the effort to you or not.
Totally understand if it's not, it is one of the challenges of our brand, but most find it rewarding in the journey!
Edit: If I remember correctly you're in the EU - we have added a lot of EU dealers, and whenever pandemic permits you might be able to give our headphones a listen in a shop: https://www.zmfheadphones.com/dealersnew
Lol, yes that was me, funny you remember. Again, I appreciate your efforts in communication. And I actually ordered the Auteur (Wenge), I've heard from so many directions that it would most likely align more with my tastes. And I will put even more effort into pad swapping this time, maybe try tubes as well. Speaking of pads I shot you an e-mail, because I have no idea what extra pads I bought, I think the selections were bugged at that moment, just said "Option 1" and "Option 2". Anyway, looking forward to it.

I've been asked to compare the VO & Aeolus. Did a detailed comparison last night; comments shown in the Table below (sorry in advance for length). All the characteristics used for comparison were whatever came to mind:
Amp: Violectric V281 (balanced output)DAC: MHDT Labs Orchid (NOS)Cables: 2M new ZMF stock/VO; 2M ForzaAudioWorks Noir HCP/Aeolus (both cables are balanced)Pads: Perforated Lambskin Universe (stock)/VO; Peforated Universe Suede/AeolusMusic: ~1 dozen .wav files of various genres (blues; R&B; reggae; Afropop; funk; classical)
SUMMARY: These headphones sound more alike than I expected in a close comparison. That great ZMF “house sound” is quite evident in both. But the differences, while not huge, do matter. Overall, the Aeolus has a somewhat more diffuse, romantic sound with a natural weight in lower registers. The VO resolves detail better, sounds ultra-clear, and has unforced accuracy. Neither is bright, edgy, or insisten. Aeolus is more “fun,” exciting, thrilling; VO is laid back yet very detailed & engrossing. Every time I hear the VO, no matter what the music genre, I think “tonal purity” (every note is clear and timbrally accurate).
Note: Verite pads push the Aeolus closer to the VO in detail & resolution (and slightly away from romance & diffuse sound). The VO always pulls ahead in resolution, but when the Aeolus has Verite pads on, resolution differences are smaller.
CONCLUSION: For me these are both must-have headphones. Their differences are meaningful to me. Each really casts a spell and makes me want to continue listening. I’ve never experienced a headphone as fun as the Aeolus; or one that presents as much detail with so little emphasis or edge as the VO (IMO the VO is a class-of-one in that regard).
Enjoy!Truly is a ZMF November and Thanksgiving!
Auteur, I believe.I just ordered a Verite Closed B Stock and I listed the same pad selection that came with my Verite Open. What are the standard pads for the Verite Closed?
Received the rest of my new gear this week and got it set up today. Matrix Audio mini-i Pro 3 to the Feliks Echo and my VO in Camphor Burl. Truly is a ZMF November and Thanksgiving!
