I actually am not sure what wood we are going to go with yet, we are in the midst of cutting and machining the Kingwood. The one thing I am thinking, is that we should do something of lighter weight as an inverse to Kingwood (which actually turned out not too bad). Some options could be Redwood Burl, Walnut Burl, Camphor Burl or something like Australian Blackwood or even Bocote.

This is pretty much what I want. A very light Caldera ideally using a wood that looks much different than my current ZMFs - Bubinga Atrium and Sapele VC.
@zach915m Are the stabilized ZMFs always on the heavy side?
I didn't have coffee gold in yet so I used the copper untreated to simulate the look. I actually think the coffee gold looks better.

Yeah stabilized are always somewhere around the weight of Bocote or purple heart.

Another deep-dive session with Caldera this morning. This album contains an early 90's selections of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood's (aka MMW) works well revealing their genre hybridness. I damn love their approaches to mix various styles of jazz-rooted music such as funk or jazz ballad with familiar rhythms obviously inspired by the East Coast hip hops. I was wondering whether and how much Caldera pull the colorful story out of the recorded signal.
Throughout the whole album, Caldera carefully revealed that there was a lot going on with successfully disintegrating all the messiness. Everything sounded transparent and orderly. For example, in the first track ('Chubb Sub'), Caldera reproduced organ, double bass, and drum with abundant musical storylines as well as barreling-down momentum. Caldera didn't quite replicate clearer sightlines into the paths charted by each instrument like Stealth, but it did offer the bulging and air-chuffing beat. Double bass notes wove dexterously through the busy passages. Organ notes beamed with color and kept their composure regardless of their pace. The hi-hat took its place amidst the percussive space. Caldera also helped me clearly identify John switched to piano later in the track, without throwing timbral differences at me.
Have my loaner Caldera burning in (day 7) & will finally do some real listening tonight.
I peeked in now & then during burn-in (can't help myself). Yesterday I cued up several familiar cuts (2 funk, 1 classical). I was amazed to easily hear the sonic deficiencies & limitations of the inexpensive d/s DAC I used for burn-in. Those things were never as readily apparent before, and I've burned in some serious ZMFs on this DAC (Atrium, VO, Aeolus).
This high degree of resolution & transparency comes from a headphone that strikes me as utterly smooth, liquid, and ear-friendly...the polar opposite of super "revealing" headphones I've heard. That's pretty interesting.
Just one more surprising sonic trick this fascinating headphone can do. The Caldera is full of surprises...
PS: The kingwood/steel hardware pictures are so beautiful!
My vote would be for Walnut for LTD run 2 as well, although personally I'm really loving the coffee gold oak and it's thankfully always available.
I need to stop reading this thread. I was so sure my next headphone purchase was going to be an Atrium this winter, and now I am............. less sure.
