I have been a Rock box fan for years (since the pre smart phone era) on a series of Sansa players. I mourned the last one's passing. I rejoiced when it was available as an Android app, and mourned again when an update to the OS rendered it unusable.
I am very interested in this DAP because it will run Rockbox.
I have missed being able to set up and save a parametric EQ preset for each headphone/IEM in my collection. The sheer power of Rockbox is amazing in so many ways.
Does anyone know if the ability to run plug-ins has been retained in this version? Being able to use the player as a guitar tuner or play a few games on it is a giant plus for me.

Thanks @wskl and @Slater for the quick reply. I decided to get one from Gearbest for $75. But do I really have to search out a Windows 7 machine at the end of 2017 to install this special version of RockBox? I think perhaps I should have waited on my purchase because I have no idea where to even begin to look for one.

It should be noted that Windows isn't actually needed. My computer is running Linux and I copy the rockbox files to the SD card via a SD card reader, then insert into the X3 for rockbox installation.

Rockboxing it 24 bit flac right? Is it noticeably worse?

Only thing stopping me from buying it is the amount of people who say the walnut v2 which is like $35 destroys it in terms of sound
I has Walnut in my cart on 11/11 and the lack of screen is what stopped me from buying or would have told you my findings. Anyway, the word 'destroy' is bit too much what I believe is the signature will change for sure. X3(CS4398) has a little roll off in treble and while Walnut seems to have a crisp treble.

X3 frequency response is very flat and extended, like it should be (slight treble roll-off when using stock firmware instead of rockbox, not noticeable).

Walnut V2 bass and treble roll-off are huge. if you get crisp treble, it might be due to impedance interactions between your phones (which probably have BA driver(s)) and walnut, because of its nasty output impedance (100Ω!). You can get rid of these impedance interactions by plugging a headphones amplifier (low output impedance, <1Ω); line out frequency response is flatter and more extended than headphones output, but it neither reaches the extension of X3.

Yes, they work fine. The cover art app crashes the player if I remember correctly (it also has terrible resolution and monochromatic color), so don't bother try it.

not in this universe..
Heard a few people say it, and that’s what threw off me a bit. I guess they hated the x3/ loved the walnut sound signature

I did end up ordering an X3. Walnuts no-screen was a deal breaker

I agree here 100%. It is one thing not to see album art but a completely different experience to not have any display. I'm old enough to remember full sized SD card players that were out before the first iPod. When a 8gb card was a huge deal. And even then with the relatively small number of files it was way too easy to loose track of what you were doing. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to deal with a 128gb card full of mp3 files but no display at all.

Walnut V2 have 100ohm output impedance, really?! It can drive 16, and 32ohm earphones very well

very well? allow me to doubt it..
besides of 100ohms output impedance, it uses tiny coupling caps.. have you checked the graphs of frequency response when paired with some phones?
Walnut V2 (by @hakuzen ): http://www.head-fi.org/t/800208/#post_13107087 (again..)
you can check there FR response of headphones output when no load: huge bass and treble roll-off.
and then, you can check there the even greater bass roll-off when using 16 and 32ohms phones, and the enormous peaks and dips when using some phones with balanced armatures.
to me, walnut doesn't drive most phones properly..
