Will my Quest for good headphones ever end?

If those ~$800 spent so far had been spent on a single pair I assume you would have been more pleased with the result.

Aka, rather take one (1) good pair over seven (7) mediocre pairs . . .

Thank god I found mine already...
<3 k701.

btw, of course, you will need a good amp and a good dac/source for it to perform as well.

higher than that would be upgrading, like hd800 or akg 2010 cans :p

If you want comfort, and not dull, dark sounding phones try some audiotechnica AD700/AD900's. I still prefer my AD700 over my SA5000 for some reason.

Next step for me would be to upgrade my amp and get a set of K701/702's

Also it sounds like you need to research your choices a lot more before you buy

Headphonic | Australian Headphone Specialists: Buy Etymotic, Alessandro, Audio Technica, Ultimate Ears, Talisman, Meier Audio and more have mini reviews on most of their phones, and in their forums they have a "most recommended" list. Marcus/snufkin is really helpful, and he actually listens to all the phones he stocks.

I agree this is true, but only if you know what it is you want. The very good to high end cans all offer something different/special. He will likely make a better expensive purchase now that he has experienced what he has. He's more familiar with what he wouldn't want and he's more familiar with the flavours in which advice from fellow head-fiers come his way. Otherwise, he'd have been shooting in the dark.

I'd personally not advise anyone to aim high on the first take... I mean $800 high.

Perhaps $300-400.

As to ever feeling happy with the cans you have? It depends. If you're willing to accept that you'll never be fully happy with a pair of cans, AND not care about what others have, AND not be lured by the promise of the latest offerings, then you could find refuge in two or three pairs, each with strengths to complement each other.

I'm being rapidly disillusioned by the lure and promise of the latest offerings, but I'm admittedly being tugged by that nagging voice saying, 'why not one last purchase for now ... the T1's or HD800's? Hmmm??? How about it buddy?'

My Ed8's are great, but have equal status in my collection as my K702's. I'm more and more beginning to not forget that it's about the music, but then there's that sweet spot between equipment that's good enough for your to enjoy your music. Unfortunately, we can so easily be consumed with the means to the end, especially when we're members of discussion boards as these.

We lose sight of the original intention.

I am going to balance it and use it in a balance setup

A good thing I like about balanced setup is that, I believe its an "Upgrade" for the headphone, which is previously in an SE Setup.
So its sound signature, its characteristic won't change much, but improved upon.

Imo, the ending path in this audio journey.. would be as follows(there are no hard and fast rules though)
-Stax
-Turntable
-Balanced

Singe ended setup, which I believe 99% of the people started of with, is just the beginning...

You didn't think of that, because its actually pretty close on the NUMPAD. >.>
Glitchy #2s type 0. If it wasn't obvious to you the intent was to type 125, then I am truely sorry for your loss. Thanks for thinking that one through, come back soon!

X2 on pretty much everything. Hopefully I am one of those that found their unholy trinity

For me it would never work to just spend it all on one and hope it sticks for all eternity. Better as mention having several cheaper headphones that both complement and compliment eachother.

I'm happy with my double, one open and one closed pair of headphones both have their different uses. I'll have an unholy trinity of my own when I eventually obtain some T1's but till then I'm happy with my grado and ultrasone combo.

Don't be so sure about the T1's.

When I got my Ed8's, I was really gobsmacked. Fate would have it that I used it exclusively for about 3 months and soon discovered its warts. All of these cans will have warts if you're given enough time and opportunity to listen to them with a wide cross section of your music. The interesting thing is that when you go back and try some of the 'forgotten' cans, you begin to appreciate them a lot more.

that's also something I fail to understand on head-fi....why do ppl keep so many pairs of crappy phones? why not selling them all and just get one killer phone...like say, a cd3k
darthsmile.gif

or I dunno, the d7k or anything else in the +$600 region...good phones are expensive, but the ROI will be right on your ears at every single second of head time.
