I love my 598, but they cannot be used to listen to rock or electronic at all. Even with the Beatles has problems. But for Jazz they are perfect. I also have a 558, and the 558 are much better value for the money.

Are you amping them properly? My HD558 are pretty punchy and I could live with them if I had to use them for electronic, and especially rock.

Hi Derbigpr,

Well, I think the 598 are properly amp (within my possibilities). I use the Fiio e17. Of course if I connect them to a higher output impedance amplifier they get MUCH more punchy, but the sound losses in other areas, because of the damping factor.

The 558 has a little smaller soundstage, but the bass is better, and like them more for listening to the Beatles or Led Zeppelin i.e. It is a matter of personal taste, the difference is very small. Since yesterday I also have the 650 hd, which is totally different, and Led Zeppelin sounds (much) better.

My subjective perception is this:

1.- 650 Sound quality really very fine - Emotion level very high
2.- 558 Sound quality fine - Emotion level high
3.- 598 Sound quality very fine - Emotion level non existent

Maybe you can try to watch Old Yeller while listening to your HD-598. That usually does the trick.

Sounds like you're an upper mids addict like me. HD-650 doesn't have recessed sounding upper mids at all to me like people usually say.
I've heard the 558 has more forward upper mids than the 598. Not sure if this is true..

How do the hd598s perform with classic rock, aor and jazz rock? Someone wrote that they are ideal for rockers that don't want their ears to bleed. I really feel I'm one of those.... :) If this is the case, I have to get my hands on a pair asap!

I think you're right, I've got both right here. The 558 does have a more forward sound. But the 598 is brighter.
Mine are the 558, 598's my Wifes. I'm not sure I'd trade her. I think I might like the 558 a little better. I did pull out the reflector tape tho. Some people say is doesn't do anything. Well I can say the Bass is a little more,it's not as forward sounding, and the stage is better. They sound kinda dull in stock form. I think you really do need to yank that tape out. Much better. Very close to the 598, the 558 was just over $100 the 598 was around $200 something. Is the price jump worth it? I don't know, the 558 holds it's own and for me it's a tad smoother...
