Emotionally, I don't regret the journey. But when calculating all that cheap stuff together, it shocks me how expensive all that gone Midfi finally was. Could have bought a brand new MS Pro or AD2000 instead.

Wow, excellent question, one that takes on greater resonance as you get older and maybe have a little more money than you did as a student.

This time I bit the bullet, going from ibuds to K701s. I've made the journey in my other hobbies (including going through cans and studio monitors for my home studio). What I learned is that - for me - the hunt for good cans (or other electronics or cars or books or clothes or ...) is not the same as the enjoyment of listening to music. It's easy for me to confuse the passion for the hunt and the passion for the music that was the reason for the hunt to begin with...

Oh yeah, one more. There's (1) the music, (2) the hunt for better at a best price, and (3) then there's the constant hanging out on specialist internet forums. Anyway, good question. Happy hunting, listening, and writing about both.

I went from a HD595 with H5
to
HD650 + after market cable with Stello HP100

Nah, don't really regret, since I know I eventually will get something similar to this

DT880s are a fairly standard 2nd step on the path. You can end where you are, but it's not like you skipped over lots of good options on the way. You can go laterally to several different headphones if you decide to later, and there are worlds of improvement to be had further along the path. So don't regret what you haven't done.

Went from MS-1 to MS2i and HD600. Quite satisfied with what I'm currently hearing. It's rather difficult to justify going any further without massive infusions of cash into the rest of my system.

.....not that I wouldn't like to!

I definitely didn't skip: started off with iBuds, then got the iBud In-Ears

The only thing I regret about my "journey" is not going straight for custom IEMs.

I dont consider it a journey getting to the better gear. More like the road from hell. My advice to everyone, skip the journey, go straight to the good stuff.

Yeah; if I knew then what I know now, I'd have probably missed MS-1 and MS2i and went straight for the MS-Pros.

Maybe my system wouldn't have been quite up to it, but.....?

You know, there is a third path.

Some people want to jump right to perfection and blow $500 or more on a single pair of headphones.

You could argue that this is silly to do when you haven't identified your preferred sound signature.

Some people go through a whole series of upgrades when they start to realize what their preferred sound signature is, and you could argue that this is a good way to spend a lot of money - more money than the guy who shot his wad on the first purchase.

Me, I'm just exploring. my dt-990 and dt-880-s are still among the best I own, but now i also have fostexen and various AKGs if i decide i want something a little different.

I know some people get frustrated and just want perfection in every situation, but the perfect is the enemy of the good, and the search for perfection leads down the road to hell.

I still can't bring myself to pay retail for a KSC75 . . .

My path was: Sony MDR-V6 -> Beyer DT-770 -> Darth Beyers -> Grado RS-1 -> Grado PS-1 -> Grado/Headphile PS-3000 -> Grado HF-1 -> Grado HHF1 -> ATH-W11JPN -> ATH-W10VTG

The advantage to going big early is you can (if you do things right) break even on your listening, decide what you like, and then find the least expensive way to reach what you like. You're not left thinking "but there's still a PS1 out there" etc.

I don't regret my path at all. I started at the very bottom and learned a TON along my way to the "top" (UE-10s). If someone had just given me a pair of UE-10s (had molds done, everything) I honestly don't think my ears would have appreciated them as much as I do now. The journey from garbage to godliness is an enlightened one. You learn so much as far as sound signature, personal preferences, comfort, etc. And like many a wise person has said before me- it's not the destination but the journey that's the thing. Going from stock iPod earbuds to the UE-10s was a journey that won't soon be forgotton.

I loved the "journey." I wonder where I should go from the RS-1? Should I try for some of the uber-rare Grados or maybe start on a new brand?
